Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has broken the 10-second barrier in the 100 metres twice in the space of three hours, but won’t enter the history books.
Gout ran a 9.99 (+3.5) in the under-20 100-metre heats of the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth, then ran a 9.99 (+2.6) in the final on Thursday night.
Neither run was legal though because they were over the legal limit of 2.0m/s wind assistance.

Still, the 17-year-old joined Patrick Johnson (a legal 9.93 in 2003) and Rohan Browning (9.96 wind-assisted in 2021) as the only Australians to ever break the magical 10-second mark, regardless of conditions.
“That’s what I was hoping for. Didn’t get the start I anticipated,” Gout said.
“If the conditions are good, hopefully I can PB (on Sunday in the senior event).”
It’s estimated the wind in his two runs on Thursday would have subtracted around 0.1 seconds from the time he would’ve run in normal conditions.

Thursday’s runs surpassed Gout’s wind-assisted 10.04 at the Australian All School Championships last December.
His fastest legal time ever is a 10.17 and it’s clear on the quicker track in the west, he will surpass that if the wind cooperates.
Lachlan Kennedy, who beat Gout at the recent Maurie Plant Meet in the 200m, has run a 10.03 before while Rohan Browning ran a 10.01 at the Tokyo Olympics.
Gout first made history in the 200 metres, running a 20.04 last December to become the fastest Australian in history, also breaking Usain Bolt’s age-group record.
