Pakistan are 7-230 after 86 overs in reply to Australia’s first-innings total of 487, with Saud Ali Agha (10) and Faheem Ashraf (0) at the crease in the second session of day three at Perth Stadium.

Saud Shakeel was caught by David Warner after a rising delivery from Josh Hazlewood caught him unawares and he trudged back to the pavillion for 28.

“He is a wonderful bowler because when he bowls a bouncer it is always on the money,” Michael Vaughan said.

“This is relentless,” Adam Gilchrist said.

Australia v Pakistan- Day Two Highlights | 08:19

Opener Imam Ul Haq faced one short of 200 balls for his 62, before he was stumped by Carey to bring Nathan Lyon to within two scalps of the 500 club.

“What a delivery for wicket number 498,” Wasim Akram said.

Mitchell Starc then skittled Sarfaraz Ahmed for three to have the toursits reeling after losing 4-63 in the first session.

Mitchell Marsh broke the partnership and took the scalp of Pakistan star Babar Azam caught behind by Alex Carey for 21 in a huge breakthrough.

“He does make things happen this big dude,” Kerry O’Keeffe said of Marsh.

It was an extremely shaky start to the third day of the first Test for Pakistan, who lost nightwatchman Khurram Shahzad on just the third ball of the day, but they have been able to steady the ship since.

Shahzad probably should have been dismissed on the first ball after some poor running between wickets from Pakistan.

Opener Imam Ul-Haq defended one to short mid wicket and called Shahzad through for a quick single that wasn’t there, with the non-striker well out of his crease. Luckily for the visitors, Travis Head’s underarm missed the stumps.

“That is comical running,” Mark Waugh said in commentary.

But two balls later, Pat Cummins sent the stumps of debutant Khurram Shahzad cartwheeling, the nightwatcher departing for seven – but having successfully played his role late in the afternoon on day two.

DAY 3 PREVIEW

Pakistan begin the third day at 2/132, trailing Australia’s first innings score (487) by 355 runs with Nathan Lyon hoping to pick up three more wickets to reach 500 Test scalps.

Lyon started the Test with 496, but has already added one to the tally after dismissing Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique.

When Lyon reaches 500, he will be just the third Aussie bowler to do so in Test matches after Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563) and eighth ever (Muttiah Muralitharan, Warne, James Anderson, Anil Kumble, Stuart Broad, McGrath, Courtney Walsh).

On day two, the visitors dug in during the 53 overs they spent at the crease, not in any rush. The vastly different approach to batting between the two sides has been evident.

‘P** weak’ – Marsh roasts his bowling | 00:49

The opening pair of Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq put on 74 for the first wicket before Shafique was dismissed by Lyon.

Shafique received a life just a couple of overs before when Alex Carey failed to remove the bails when the batsman’s foot was just off the ground. It wouldn’t matter much though.

Pakistan captain Shan Mahood scored a rapid 30 before edging one to Carey off the bowling of Mitch Starc.
