AFL Teams Round 23: At least two Blue debuts with injury carnage; Swans’ shock superstar blow

Carlton’s injury carnage will force at least two AFL debutants for their crunch trip west, Sydney loses a superstar and Fremantle’s finals hopes take a hit. Round 23 teams!

The Blues already confirmed all of Charlie Curnow (ankle), Harry McKay (quad), Adam Saad (hamstring), Jack Martin (hamstring), Lachie Fogarty (collarbone) and Jordan Boyd (adductor) will all miss through injuries sustained against Hawthorn last week, while Orazio Fantasia did not pass a fitness test.

Their replacements are still yet to be confirmed, but we do know that debutant Cooper Lord will be debuting, and at least one other of his teammates.

Jaxon Binns, Lewis Young, Jack Carroll and Corey Durdin all look certain starers, while at least one of Harry Lemmey, Billy Wilson, Ashton Moir and Domanic Akuei will fly to Perth for the must-win clash in Perth on Sunday night.

Their opponents the Eagles have been fortunate enough to keep things far simpler, with no outs named as of yet for the Sunday evening clash, though that means Tom Barrass will not return and could’ve played his last home game for the club.

The travelling Swans have been dealt a big blow, and will be without All-Australian hopeful Chad Warner (sore calf) as well as Robbie Fox – who have both been listed as injured.

The duo will be replaced by Corey Warner and Lewis Melican.

At Windy Hill, the Bombers will be without 200cm winger Nik Cox (concussion) and Alwyn Davey Jnr (omitted), but Sam Weideman will come in for his first game of 2024 alongside young gun Archie Perkins. Dyson Heppell may have played his final home game as he misses out.

The Dockers will go in without Josh Treacy and Sean Darcy for the second week running, with Justin Longmuir opting to hand untried ruck Liam Reidy a debut after a superb season in the WAFL.

Like Essendon’s Weideman, Nathan O’Driscoll will also play his first game of the year as the second inclusion.

Tall Matt Taberner has been dropped, as has Karl Worner.

Conversely, home side GWS have welcomed back Stephen Coniglio and Kieran Briggs for the clash that could determine their top four fate, with Toby McMullin also overcoming a groin injury to return.

In their place falls out a managed Harvey Thomas, with Xavier O’Halloran and Max Gruzewski dropped.

At the Cats, Mitch Knevitt and Gary Rohan – who was a late out last week in Perth – have been called upon to play St Kilda on Saturday night, with Zach Tuohy (managed) joining a concussed Tanner Bruhn out of the side.

Opponents St Kilda have ruled out an ill Mattaes Phillipou for a second straight week after his late exclusion against the Tigers last week – with Hugo Garcia rewarded for his excellent VFL form to replace Angus McLennan.

‘It’s a disgrace!’ – Lyon’s EPIC rant | 01:46

The Crows have lost star veteran Taylor Walker for the Showdown after eye surgery, with Lachie Gollant back for his first game six Round 6 after a monster eight-goal haul in the SANFL last week against West Adelaide.

Their cross-town rivals Port Adelaide will be without Todd Marshall (concussion), leaving Charlie Dixon as the sole tall in attack – a rare sight for Power fans.

Ryan Burton is the Power’s sole inclusion for the clash, with Esava Ratugolea expected to play up forward once again.

North Melbourne earlier ruled out Harry Sheezel today with an ankle injury, with George Wardlaw the likely replacement named on the extended bench.

Luke Beveridge has surprisingly dropped Riley Garcia and Nick Coffield alongside the injured Tim English, potentially opening the door for the exiled Jack Macrae to return on Sunday afternoon against the Roos after some serious VFL form.

As first reported by foxfooty.com.au, two-time All-Australian Gold Coast Touk Miller will return for the first time since Round 17 from a broken wrist, replacing the omitted Alex Sexton.

After a long week, the Demons will similarly only make one change, with last week’s late out Jake Bowey replacing Clayton Oliver (knee/ribs/hand), who’s season is now over.

Eric Hipwood returns for Brisbane’s Grand Final replay against Collingwood, who regain Wil Parker.

The teams for Sunday’s games will be confirmed at 5pm on Friday.
