First Test LIVE: Marnus move ‘adds insult’ to Aussie injury as heat rises over ‘selfish’ act

Australia will resume on day four needing a miracle to avoid India taking a 1-0 series lead after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli batted the hosts out of the first Test match in Perth.

Australia are 3-12 in their second innings trailing by a massive 522 runs, with Usman Khawaja (3) and Steve Smith (0) at the crease.

Jasprit Bumrah has 2-1 on the back of his first innings five wicket haul, including the scalps of Nathan McSweeney for a duck and Marnus Labuschagne for 3, while Mohammed Siraj has 1-7 after taking out the Australian captain and night watchmen Pat Cummins.

Australia is also without a review after Labuschagne took one back with him to the sheds after he was trapped plumb LBW.

Speaking on Fox Cricket, Adam Gilchrist said that the review “adds the extra insult to injury there”.

Others, were far less restrained, piling the heat on Labuschagne who was also out for 2 from 52 balls in the first innings, has been criticised for his negative bowling tactics, and has been dismissed for a single digit score in seven of his past eight Test innings.

Day three belonged to Jaiswal, who belted 15 fours and three sixes in his 161 and Kohli, who blasted eight fours and two sixes in his unbeaten drought-breaking century.

“Day three was an absorbing day’s cricket,” Gilchrist said.

“India turned up with a strong advantage and they rammed that home by stumps on day three.

“There was drama all the way to the very last ball. Bumrah came out with new ball in hand and a lead of 534 and he made immediate impact.”

Ravi Shastri praised the Indian bowlers for turning up the pressure on the Australian top order late in the day.

“They attacked the stumps,” Shastri said.

“They would have realised there are cracks on the surface and they didn’t waste any time in zeroing in on the stumps.

“That one kept low on McSweeney, who was a little unlucky, but the Indians were on target.

“I thought Pat Cummins came out a little too early with 20 to 25 minutes to go as a night watchmen coming out.

“Siraj striking and then this is a big one, Marnus Labuschagne misjudging it all together and again it is Bumrah.

Aus v India – Test 1, Day 3 Highlights | 08:14

“You can’t afford to leave deliveries like that when the bounce is variable and obviously Australia paid the price for it.

“But what a last half-hour of cricket. Three wickets down and still trailing by 521. India in the driver’s seat.”

Gilchrist believes the day belonged to young gun Jaiswal who put hosts to the sword.

“But we go back to earlier in the day and a man we already spoke about because he was 90 not out overnight, Yashasvi Jaiswal who went on to pick up his fourth Test match century and all coming on the back of a duck in the first innings. He learnt quickly what a moment this was.”

Aussie opening legend David Warner was full of praise for Jaiswal, who has well and truly arrived as a star of world cricket.

“That’s an amazing moment for him there,” Warner said.

Hazlewood reflects on horror day 3 | 08:14

“He has come over to Australia and didn’t trouble the scorers in the first innings. But to bring up the 100. You said Ravi on the back pages at home a future star right there.

“Have a look at that. A beautiful moment for him and his family as well. A special, special talent he is and in good company out there alongside KL Rahul with plenty of experience. But emotions out there were really high.”

However, Gilchrist believes the back end of day three belonged to veteran Kohli who silenced his critics with a majestic century.

“A future star and a star on the rise and a player alongside him when he came to the crease and a player that he has admired in a star that has been around a good 13 years in Virat Kohli,” Gilchrist said.

King Kohli century caps perfect day! | 03:13

“It has been a little bit of a dry spell by his lofty standards. But this was a beautiful moment when he was able to bring up his century Ravi and he celebrated in style and emotionally he paid tribute to his family.”

Shastri believes Kohli’s chanceless ton has helped set up the series for India.

“What a release this is to reach that 100,” Shastri said.

“The monkey is off his back. He came here under immense pressure where he was told time and time again what he has done over the last two years and what his batting average is.

“But people forget when it comes to the big stage the big boys arrive and the King is back in his territory and he batted like a King.

“He looked good from the outset today from the moment he came into bat. The feet were moving, the balance was good. He was allowing the ball to come onto the bat.

“This is something special for him. Two Test matches in Perth. Two hundreds and seven hundreds in Australia.

“I doubt there is any overseas player who has come into this country in the last 15 years that has come even close to that kind of performance.”

Australia have it all to do with two days to save the first Test, but India look near certainties to go 1-0 up in the best of five series.

“The crown still fits the King’s head,” Gilchrist said.

“A fascinating day three of cricket. Australia 521 runs in arrears. Seven second innings wickets in hand. Don’t miss any of day four.”
