Trent Robinson was defiant in the face of criticism as he reflected on his Roosters side’s performance in their 50-14 hammering at the hands of the Broncos in Round 1.

Speaking in his press conference, Robinson admitted disappointment in his side’s defensive performance, but commended their ability to keep working hard for each other in the face of a red hot Broncos onslaught.
“I gave them a big wrap for effort,” Robinson said.
“I thought our physicality and effort was really high. I was really proud of them for that.
“I thought our smarts was really, really low. We got beaten a lot just with some tackling for the most part.

“Fourth tackle in the first half was an issue with our tackling. We fixed that up in the second half and then we got beaten on short sides with numbers and we got beaten on last play chaos as well.”

While disappointed his side struggled to stay in touch with the Broncos despite scoring the first try of the night, he still saw his players working hard in defence.
“It is hard to separate we get beaten by 50 points and you are really disappointed, but I thought everybody worked really, really hard for each other,” Robinson said.
“But our smarts were at a really low standard and we got found out many times.”

Robinson revealed Victor Radley was OK, despite his concussion, but is likely to need time on the sidelines and the Roosters will go through the protocols.
He also revealed Nat Butcher underwent surgery and will not be back next week after he was a late scratching from the team to face the Broncos.
