‘Forward from every angle’: Mam’s controversial return for Broncos before stunning solo try

Broncos No. 6 Ezra Mam has made a stunning but controversial return against the Dragons on Sunday afternoon.

Mam served his nine-game suspension for an off-field incident and then played one game of Queensland Cup before making his comeback against St George Illawarra.

The 22-year-old set up the first try of the match when he put Gehamat Shibasaki over in the 18th minute but replays showed it was a blatant forward pass.

“Pass marginal… Shibasaki goes over. Gutherson protests to the ref, says ‘Sir it was forward’ but they’ve locked in the try and Mam gets the try assist in his first game back,” Andrew Voss said on Fox League.

“He couldn’t swing his body around far enough for the ball to go backwards so the ball just went forward, simple as that,” Greg Alexander responded.

“He was trying to turn the body but it was an almost an impossible situation that he found himself in but threw the pass anyway.”

“It’s forward from every angle,”Voss continued.

“Wow. The Dragons will have to put that one behind them, there have been forward passes in the game since 1908, there is plenty of time to get over it but it doesn’t make the pill any easier to swallow.”

Mam then scored the second try of the match with a brilliant solo effort from close to the line and there were no doubts this time.

“Can’t question the second try, certainly could the first,” Voss said.
