In the 27th minute with the Broncos leading 6-0 at Suncorp Stadium, Hughes attempted a tackle on a rampaging Piakura, before reeling in pain the next time he tried to throw a pass.
“Hughes is in trouble, in awful pain throwing a routine pass,” Dan Ginnane said on Fox League.
“This is huge Jahrome Hughes clutching at his wrist. It was the shoulder we were concerned about, but now it is the wrist. Massive development here for the Storm.
“Brendan Piakura charged over him in an earlier tackle and that was a horrible sight watching him throw that pass and going down in agony.”
“He is leaving the field and Wishart is onto the field,” Cooper Cronk added.
Sideline reporter Eloise Sohier confirmed Hughes had suffered a suspected broken wrist.
“Just confirmation from the Melbourne Storm bench he has broken his wrist,” Sohier said.
“The staff said to me it is a suspected broken wrist. He has gone up the tunnel and it looks like his night is over.”

Ginnane and Cronk noted the Storm’s premiership hopes may have gone off the field with Hughes.
“This is a disaster for Melbourne, a broken wrist on the eve of the finals,” Ginnane said.
“The finals have just changed complexion.
“The Dally M Medal player of the year last year and Melbourne’s best player this year before he got injured is out with a suspected broken wrist. That is a massive story. A disaster for the Storm. Their task just got a lot harder.”
“The Brisbane Broncos and Brendan Piakura have just changed the complexion of this finals series,” Cronk added.
“Jahrome Hughes just came back after five games out with a left shoulder injury and now it looks like a suspected broken wrist.”
