Quartet of eights, shock No.1 Sun and ‘Dusty 2.0’ in memorable maiden win — Suns Player Ratings

A historic Suns finals win was driven by their two midfield stars, as well as a sturdy backline that was, at times, impenetrable.

And there’s lots of room for improvement, with a few forwards having down nights.

We rate every Gold Coast player out of 10 from their elimination final win over Fremantle.

1. Mac Andrew

Suns’ clutch man delivers again! Went to Josh Treacy at the first bounce and was excellent in defence with 20 touches, 10 spoils and eight marks. Then pushed forward late to take a towering mark and nail a set-shot goal to draw score level with just over a minute to go. 7

2. John Noble

As he has done all year, generated ample run and drive from the back half. Went to Isaiah Dudley early. Finished with 20 disposals. 6

3. Sam Flanders

Quiet start and didn’t have a big influence across the game. Finished with just 14 touches. 4

5. Alex Davies

Gold Coast’s No.1 rated player in its maiden final!. Big moment in the second term, laying an excellent tackle to win a holding the ball free kick before nailing the set-shot goal. Had 19 touches, 14 contested possessions, seven tackles and six clearances. 7

8. Brayden Fiorini

Spent a lot of time on the wing. A smart soccer goal in the second term to give the Suns some breathing space. Had 14 disposals. 5

9. Ben Ainsworth

Picked up by Karl Worner. Very quiet across three and a bit quarters, subbed out early in the fourth term with just five disposals and one tackle. 2

11. Touk Miller

So many little but crucial selfless moments, with clever taps to advantage, well-timed tackles and relentless chases. Finished with 18 touches and 11 tackles. You’ve got to feel good for him. 7

14. Lachie Weller

Busy start to the game, including a sizzling kick inside 50. Finished with 17 touches and went at 63 per cent by foot. 5

15. Noah Anderson

Oh captain, my captain. Set the tone at stoppages with four first-quarter clearances then had 11 touches in the second quarter alone. Of his 32 touches, 11 led to Suns scores. Also had 13 contested possessions, eight inside 50s, six clearances and 653m gained. 8

17. Daniel Rioli

Started on Freo young gun Murphy Reid. Provided great dash and drive off half-back, but not his usual influential self. 4

18. Matt Rowell

The whole footy world was waiting to see him in finals — and lived up to all the hype. A monster game: 34 disposals, 12 contested possessions, 11 inside 50s, 10 score involvements, six tackles and 638m gained. 8

19. Bailey Humphrey

Dusty 2.0? A second quarter to remember. Had Jordan Clark on him early stages. Took him until the second quarter to get his first disposal — and he exploded into the game, snapping a sensational goal on the non-preferred left foot before a powerful contested mark let to a second major. Took his chances, put himself in damaging positions and finished off his work. Fox Footy’s Nathan Buckley said: “Hasn’t he lit this game up? Doesn’t need a lot of touches to do a lot of damage.” 7

20. Ethan Read

Started forward with Alex Pearce for company. Competed reasonably well both in the ruck and inside forward 50, but really tired as the game wore on and was probably fortunate he wasn’t subbed. 3

22. Ben Long

The answer to your next pub trivia question as the first Suns player to kick a goal in an AFL final. Had a great match-up with Luke Ryan and probably took the points, playing with great presence and energy inside the forward arc. Finished with 2.1 from nine touches. 6

24. David Swallow

What a fairytale. An emotional re-call to the side, but started as the sub. Injected into the game in the fourth quarter and, by his own admission, thought he’d lost the game for his side with a turnover in the corridor. But made amends minute late, kicking the match-winning point from long range in one of the most poetic finishes to a sporting match you could think of. N/A

25. Sam Collins

Thrived on the finals stage. Tasked with curtailing Jye Amiss, who only kicked one goal. Played with great presence and confidence in an enormous first term when the Suns’ backline was under the pump, with Fox Footy’s Matthew Pavlich saying: “Time and time again, he was the one who bodied first.” Finished with 10 intercepts. 8

27. Wil Powell

Super game. Started on Michael Frederick, who was well held. A brilliant play in the third term, intercepting the ball, sprinting forward and nailing a dart of a kick inside 50. Really set the tone with his intercepting and precise ball use, often choosing to go corridor. Finished with a team-high 12 intercepts and 18 touches. 8

28. Jarrod Witts

Enormous, as always. Took on Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson headstrong. Finished with 21 disposals, 15 contested possessions and eight clearances, with eight of his 44 hit-outs to a teammate’s advantage. 7

32. Bodhi Uwland

Had the job on Patrick Voss early and was sturdy all night. Played with supreme confidence, finishing with 13 disposals, 10 spoils and three intercept marks. 7

34. Ben King

Had Brennan Cox for company and was probably beaten. Kicked 0.3 from 11 touches and three marks, while he didn’t lay a tackle. 4

35. Connor Budarick

A game of big moments. A goal-saving tackle on Nathan O’Driscoll late in the first term when the Suns were under siege, then pushed forward in the second term to soccer through a classy goal before adding another major just before half-time. Just as importantly, laid six tackles. 6

40. Joel Jeffrey

Rebound and drive personified. had 19 disposals, eight rebound 50s and 515m gained. 5

50. Jy Farrar

Shut the home crowd up at the start of the fourth term, nailing a tricky goal. Had nine touches. 5
