Jaw-dropping record Aus Open prize pool revealed as Djoker makes concerning lead-up call

The winners of this year’s Australian Open will pocket a record $4.15m after tournament officials announced a staggering prize pool for the first tennis major of 2026.

And it won’t just be the winners who leave Melbourne with their purses full, with confirmation this year’s prize pool will be the largest in Australian Open history, rising from $96.5m a year ago to sit at a whopping $111.5m.

The eye-watering sum is a 16 per cent increase, with those who fall in the first round of qualifying set to leave with $40,500.

“This 16 per cent increase demonstrates our commitment to supporting tennis careers at every level,” Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said.

“From boosting qualifying prize money by 55 per cent since 2023 to enhancing player benefits, we’re ensuring professional tennis is sustainable for all competitors.

“This investment strengthens tennis’s foundation, ensuring the sport’s long-term health and commercial growth.

“By supporting players at all levels, we’re building deeper talent pools and more compelling storylines for fans.”

Runner-up: $2.15M (+13%)

Semi-finalists: $1.25M (+14%)

Quarter-finalists: $750K (+13%)

Fourth round: $480K (+14%)

Third round: $327.75K (+13%)

Second round: $225K (+13%)

First Round: $150K (+14%)

Q1: $40.5K (+16%)

Q2: $57K (+16%)

Q3: $83.5K (+16%)

Meanwhile, former world No.1 Novak Djokovic won’t play at next week’s Adelaide International, with the 10-time Australian Open winner revealing on social media that he’s not physically able to compete.

It’s not ideal preparation for the 38-year-old, with the Australian Open beginning on January 18.

“To all my fans in Adelaide, unfortunately I’m not quite physically ready to compete in the Adelaide International next week,” he wrote.

“It’s personally very disappointing to me, as I have such great memories of winning the title there (in 2023).

“I was really excited about returning as it truly felt like playing at home.

“My focus is now on my preparation for the Australian Open and I look forward to arriving in Melbourne soon and seeing all the tennis fans in Australia.”
