Tropical Storm Idalia is prompting evacuations and closures in Florida as it is expected to make landfall later this week.
At least three notable colleges and universities in the state have already announced they are closing and canceling classes.
Florida A&M University Tallahassee main campus will be closed on Wednesday, the school said in a statement. The university said everyone should shelter in place and that it has a plan in place to provide food and water to students.
The campus will reopen “as soon as Emergency Management gives the all clear,” the statement said.
Flordia State University is closing its Tallahassee campus and canceling classes on Wednesday. In an alert on its website, it said classes and normal business operations are expected to resume on Thursday.
“University officials continue to closely monitor the developments of this severe weather event and remind individuals not to travel into areas with deteriorating weather conditions,” the school said.
The University of Florida has also announced it will be closed starting at noon on Tuesday through Wednesday.
“All academic and student-related activities, including online classes and exams, will also be canceled during that time,” it said in a statement. The university said more information about when things will reopen is expected to be released on Wednesday.
