‘Domination’: Coach reaction says it all as flag fancies flex again… but sparky provides shining light

Gold Coast has continued its hot start to 2026 by trouncing West Coast at People First Stadium to close out Round 1 on Sunday night.

Buoyed by a statement Opening Round win over Geelong, the Suns piled on 13 first-half goals to lead the travelling Eagles by 62 points and render the second half elementary, ultimately prevailing 20.11 (131) to 10.12 (72).

Christian Petracca had another stellar outing, booting four goals from 23 disposals and six clearances, while Ben King topped the scoresheet with five goals.

3. STAR SUN’S SECOND-STRAIGHT ‘CLINIC’ SETS TONE

We saw it last week against the 2025 year’s grand finalist Geelong, and on Sunday night, West Coast got handed their own Christian Petracca “clinic”.

The 214-gamer picked up right where he left off at Carrara in Opening Round, kicking three goals before quarter time to leave the Eagles dead for all money before they could even cry for help.

“Petracca put on a clinic early in the piece. He was best on ground and kicked three goals in the first quarter,” 1988 Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy told Fox Footy at half time.

“A little bit less impact that (second) quarter, but he’s just so sharp at the present time. He’s not fumbling, he’s clean at ground level.

“There’s no doubt his kicking has improved. Last year, he was a ‘bomber’ — all he did was bomb (the ball). This year, he’s not missing goals, he’s nailing them. He’s hitting targets.”

The 2021 Norm Smith Medallist finished the Round 1 finale with 23 touches, four goals and 537 metres gained.

Petracca continued to adopt a midfielder-forward role throughout the clash, perhaps amplified by the resting of Bailey Humphrey (hamstring awareness), who kicked four goals of his own last week playing a similar role.

“It’s the perfect scenario, isn’t it? He gets midfield minutes, goes forward and has a rest, then rotates off the field as well,” Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson said.

“He’s strong in the air, and he’s creating really strong layers through the midfield, in regards to what they’re all achieving today.

In AFL game 207, former club captain Jarrod Witts recorded his best-ever first half of football with Sherin in hand, with 14 of his 20 touches coming before the first break. He also had 27 hitouts and a goal before the end of the second stanza.

Incumbent leader Noah Anderson filled his own stat sheet before a late knock to the head from the knee of young Eagle Jobe Shanahan, after a Harley Reid bump.

In the first half, Gold Coast kicked 7.3 (45) points from stoppages to the Eagles 1.2 (8), and were 3.1 (19) to 0.0 (0) at centre bounce.

2. 33-MINUTE STRETCH THAT SHOULD GIVE EAGLES FANS HOPE

Any West Coast supporters who turned on Fox Footy at the start of the second half, would’ve been impressed with what they saw from their side — particularly in the third quarter. 

After restarting play 62 points down, Andrew McQualter’s side managed to kick 5.4 and claim the stanza’s honours by 14 points; largely led by returning Eagles veteran Elliot Yeo and his two goals.

“It’s so good to see him back playing fully fit through the middle of the ground, after spending all of last year on the sidelines in 2025 with ankle and knee injuries,” three-time Brisbane premiership player Alastair Lynch said on the cusp of the final break.

“It’s good to see his power and ability to get around the ground, but also the penetration with his kick. This is something we haven’t noticed for a long time, that overhead power as well.

“We know at his very best off half-back or through the midfield, he’s one of the elite players of the competition.

“He is a key. The excitement around the youngsters is at the very top, but it needs to be underpinned by experienced players like Elliot Yeo.”

While the Eagles had 21 less inside 50 entries than their Suns opponents, they went at a very high 59 per cent efficiency going inside their own arc. Additionally, they had 27 more tackles. 

“The tackling pressure from the West Coast Eagles, they were plus 21 over Gold Coast for tackles in that term. That’s the biggest tackle count they’ve had in a quarter in their history, in terms of better than their opposition,” Lynch added.

“It’s great to see from West Coast. They’ve been spirited in this third quarter after they could’ve just got blown off the park.”

1. SSP BOLTER’S CRAZY 18-DAY TURNAROUND TO LEAD NEW ERA

Ex-sparky Milan Murdock wasn’t even on an AFL list 18 days ago. But, on debut at the top level, the mature-age SSP signing was one of very few shining lights for West Coast.

The 25-year-old was one of six players making either their AFL or club debut for the Eagles on Sunday night, and was arguably the best of the lot alongside former Lion Deven Robertson.

Murdock’s first of two goals was the only disposal inside the Eagles’ forward 50 for the opening 14 minutes of the clash, coming courtesy of a holding-the-ball tackle on Mac Andrew that then saw the fiery Sun give away a 50-metre penalty to the top of the goalsquare.

The debutant then followed up with a second major to close out the first half, and finished with 22 disposals (15 contested) and eight score involvements come full time.

“Two weeks ago on the tools, now he’s up against seasoned professional athletes …he’s working hard,” Alastair Lynch said in the final term.

Gerard Healy added: “I’ll tell you what, though, given what electricians charge these days, he’s taking a pay cut!” 

Robertson recorded a career-high 12 tackles to go with his 17 touches and five clearances.

2025 Pick No.1 Willem Duursma, Cooper Duff-Tytler, Josh Lindsay and Tylar Young also played their first game in Eagles colours on Sunday evening.
