‘Absolutely filthy’: Pie’s call to concussed star’s mum backfires as Dees’ ‘disgust’ revealed

Melbourne has reportedly been left “filthy” and “disgusted” over the Brayden Maynard-Angus Brayshaw situation as more details have come to light of the Pies star’s visit to the concussed Demon’s house.

Maynard went to the home of Brayshaw on Friday, less than 24 hours after the hit that left the Dees veteran knocked unconscious for up to two minutes on the MCG turf.

SEN’s Sam Edmund revealed Maynard arrived with “flowers and wine” – but what transpired was an “awkward” visit as several Melbourne players were already at the home supporting their injured teammate.

“I’m told Maynard’s visit was awkward,” Edmund said on Sportsday on Monday.

“He was allowed in but the awkwardness was actually heightened by the fact that Brayshaw already had multiple Melbourne teammates visiting him the day after the game.

“From what I’ve been told, one of those teammates was particularly angered by Maynard’s presence and had to remove himself from the room just to make sure nothing untoward eventuated.

“The teammate removed himself – a Melbourne player.

“Despite Maynard’s good intentions, this wasn’t a well-received visit.

“According to the people I’ve spoken to close to this, it was more of an awkward ‘well we’ll let him in because we can’t turn him away’ and then it just got more awkward from there.”

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson later provided more information on Maynard’s “tense” visit to Brayshaw’s house as well as an uneasy phone call to the Demon’s mother.

“The reason (Maynard) was let into the house I think was because Max Gawn and Christian Petracca happened to be there and Max Gawn let him in,” Wilson said on Channel 9’s Footy Classified.

“It was pretty tense, I understand, I’m not sure the flowers actually made it to a vase.

“I think Brayden Maynard also contacted Brayshaw’s mother Deb, I don’t think that conversation went very well at all.”

Wilson also revealed the extent of Melbourne’s anger over the situation given the seriousness of Brayshaw’s setback.

“Melbourne are absolutely filthy at this, they’re disgusted at some of the excuses that are coming out of Collingwood’s mouths and some of the commentators’ mouths, that the player should get off,” she added.

“They are filthy partly because they lost one of their best players very early in the game.

“They keep saying: ‘This is not a concussion, this was a two minute loss of consciousness.’

“Even if Melbourne win this week, I very much doubt he’ll play in the preliminary final, he’s even in doubt for the grand final.”

Earlier, Chief Herald Sun reporter and AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson said there was “angst” among the Brayshaw camp.

“The Brayshaw camp want a suspension. There’s a few people close to Angus who believe that was a deliberate act by Maynard to hurt Angus Brayshaw,” Robinson told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“So there’s another layer to the legal complexities, there’s the concussion debate overall … but the emotional layer is there’s a lot of angst. I wouldn’t say it’s outright anger, but there’s a lot of angst that a player can get knocked out for two minutes – which is very emotive … this is just a sport and they want justice.”

AFL 360 co-host Gerard Whateley added: “Brayshaw was feeling anger on Thursday night and he wanted no part of Maynard at that point.”

Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph said the Demons remain “livid” over the support Maynard has been receiving for the hit that has more than likely ended Brayshaw’s season – and potentially his career given his concussion history.

“I don’t think he’d play again this year,” Ralph said On the Couch.

“The Demons are just livid about this – they feel like Brayden Maynard is being supported by people despite knocking out a player.”

The club’s anger comes as Brayshaw’s brother Hamish said the 27-year-old would now undergo brain scans as a result of the Maynard collision.

“I spoke to him earlier on today – he’s having some scans on his brain from the same doctor who looked after him a few years ago,” Hamish Brayshaw told media from the Sandover Medal count in Perth.

“Health comes number one and he’s got a life to live after football.

“I think that’ll be something he’ll assess over the off-season and whether or not his body can keep going, time will tell.”

Brayshaw, who is engaged to daughter of the late Danny Frawley, has endured a shocking run with concussion – suffering four in the space of 12 months earlier in his career.

Fox Footy’s Garry Lyon said the whole Maynard/Brayshaw collision had rocked both the Brayshaw and Frawley families, given the history they’ve endured with head knocks.

“We just want to give a shout out to the Brayshaw family. There’s emotion around this everywhere – Angus has had history of course for a long period of time,” he said On the Couch.

“For his mum and dad, it would have been a harrowing experience (to see him unconscious and then stretchered off the MCG).

“I’m led to believe he was out cold, not concussed, but out cold for a period of time.

“Of course his fiancé is Danielle Frawley, who’s part of the Frawley family. Our great friend Danny had posthumous CTE issues and mental health issues and for Anita and the Frawley family, it’s been pretty traumatic as well.

“We just want to shout out to the Frawley family.”

Maynard will head to the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday in a bid to reduce the ban he’s been handed that will end his 2023 season.
