All-rounder Beau Webster and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis have been released from the Test squad to play Big Bash League matches for their respective franchises, Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday.
Following the conclusion of the Boxing Day Ashes Test at the MCG, which only lasted two days courtesy of a green wicket and some reckless batting, Australia’s players have been granted a seven-day break until the New Year’s contest in Sydney.
Speaking to reporters in Melbourne on Sunday, Travis Head was asked whether he or any of his teammates would consider playing some Big Bash cricket before the SCG Test against England, with the Australian opener admitting it was an unlikely prospect for any of the first-choice players.

However, CA has confirmed that Webster and Inglis, who missed selection for the Boxing Day Test, would be available for BBL games this week. Webster will join the Hobart Hurricanes ahead of Monday’s match against the Melbourne Renegades in Hobart, while Inglis will join the Perth Scorchers ahead of Tuesday’s clash with the Sydney Thunder.
Both players will still be considered for selection for the fifth and final Ashes Test against England, which commences on January 4.
“Both players will return to the Australian squad on New Year’s Eve to prepare for the Ashes Test at the SCG,” CA confirmed in a statement.
If selected, Webster could makes his first appearance for the Hurricanes in nine years on Monday, with the Tasmanian representing the Melbourne Stars and Renegades across the last eight summers. He returned to his hometown club ahead of the 2025/26 season on a three-year deal.
Defending champions Hobart are currently second on the Big Bash standings with three wins from four encounters, while the Scorchers are coming off consecutive losses, sitting at fifth on the ladder.
The Melbourne Stars will host the Thunder at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on Sunday, with the first ball scheduled for 7.15pm AEDT.
