Australian golf officials have reacted as Tropical Cyclone Alfred draws closer to the Queensland coast and cancelled the Women’s PGA Championship that was set to be played on the Gold Coast this week.

Millions have been warned to brace for days without power after the tropical cyclone makes landfall later this week, having been upgraded to a category 2 system overnight.

It is expected to turn west “directly” towards the coast of Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast later on Tuesday, with the cyclone about 560km east of the capital as of Tuesday morning.

While AFL and NRL officials wait to make a decision on games set for Brisbane and the Gold Coast this weekend, the “unprecedented” call was made to cancel the golf tournament that was to be played at Sanctuary Cove Golf Club.

“Following extensive consultation with all stakeholders, the 2025 Australian WPGA Championship and Gold Coast Festival of Golf have been cancelled due to the impending impact of Cyclone Alfred,” a statement said.

“After monitoring weather forecasts and following dialogue with the Queensland government, Gold Coast City Council, Mulpha Group, Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club and the Ladies European Tour, we have taken the unprecedented decision to cancel the event ahead of the first day’s play set to take place on Thursday.

“With the predicted high rainfall, extreme winds and expected flooding, the decision has been made to ensure the safety of players, staff, fans and all stakeholders, which remains the priority.

“Although supremely disappointing, all stakeholders now look ahead to 2026 with the tournament blueprint already in place to ensure we have an exciting Australian WPGA Championship and Gold Coast Festival of Golf.”

The tournament won’t be played on an alternative date.
