Following his retirement after the 2017 season, Petrie served in off-field roles at the Eagles including as their academy high performance coach, then as wellbeing and development manager.
But the breakdown of his marriage was the subject of social media rumours during 2025 and Petrie departed the club, now moving back to Victoria.
Speaking exclusively with Nine’s Owen Leonard, the former All-Australian revealed the personal impact of the saga.
“To have what was going on in my personal life become somewhat public was difficult to navigate,” he said.
“The support of friends and family was something I’ve craved at this time, and the move back here was based on that. The broken heart that I carry through me will heal over time, as people who’ve lived with similar experiences have shared with me.”
Petrie received assistance from the AFLPA and says he’s now in a better place with their help, along with the help of friends and family.
“When you enter challenging periods in your life, don’t try to fix them yourself. I tried to solve what was going on in my life myself and got to a point where I was broken,” Petrie said.
“People are only too happy to help if you let them know you need some help.”
He remains hopful of returning to AFL clubland.
“The time here at North was so memorable. Being back here and being back to Victoria now will give me a chance to reflect a bit more, walk through the rooms and just connect with the club a bit,” Petrie said.
“I’d love to enter the four walls of a footy club again but I’m also just excited to be able to go and watch North Melbourne this season.”
