Bizarre twist in Luai future: What m Galvin bombshell really means for Tigers, Benji

Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel for the long-suffering Tigers fans.

Marquee recruit Jarome Luai and rising ace Lachlan Galvin spearheading a resurgent outfit led by club legend Benji Marshall, littered with rising stars like Fonua Pole and Jahream Bula.

But that fairytale has quickly turned into a nightmare, with Galvin’s decision spiralling into one of the NRL’s wildest contract sagas in recent memory.

Watch your team in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership. Stream every round LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play, on Kayo Sports. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer.

The 19-year-old dropped a bombshell ahead of Round 6, informing Tigers management he would be hitting the open market come November, with his contract running until 2026.

In the process, he snubbed a mammoth five-year contract worth up to $6 million, dubbed in a club statement the “the largest contract offer for a junior in the history of the club”.

The release was a bitter one, explaining the club “is disappointed, but we move on” — and that sentiment was clearly shared by the playing group, with angry senior players approaching Marshall to demand that Galvin was exiled from their squad for Easter Monday.

So — what now? How long can this go on and what does the future hold?

The Eels, Bulldogs, Sea Eagles and Cowboys appear to be Galvin’s most likely landing spots — and all would benefit from recruiting one of the game’s best rising talents.

But where to now for the Tigers, Galvin, Marshall and the likes of Jarome Luai?

THIS YEAR’S OUTLOOK

After six rounds, the Tigers have shown major improvements, both in attack and defence.

A shaky first season under the club’s rookie coach was to be expected, but after some impressive recruitment and time to embed his philosophy, positives have flowed.

New recruits Jarome Luai, Terrell May, Sunia Turuva, Jack Bird, Jeral Skelton and Royce Hunt have helped in a big way.

After six games, the Tigers are three wins and three losses, and sitting in seventh position. It’s a massive improvement on the three previous seasons where they collected the wooden spoon.

Six games into the season, the Tigers have conceded 110 points, which, according to the Fox Sports Lab, is their fewest points through six games since a club record 67 in 2018. The Tigers are conceding just 18.3 points per game in 2025, with only the top of the table Bulldogs (11.6) and Knights (17.2) averaging fewer.

If the Tigers finish the season conceding just 18.3 points per game, it would be the second-best defensive season in their history. In 2011, which coincidentally was the last year the Tigers made the top eight, they conceded just 17.8 points per game. On two occasions already this season, the Tigers have held their opponents to six points or less.

That matches the total number of times they achieved this across the previous four seasons (2021-2024) combined. The last time they held their opponents to six points or less more than twice in a season was in 2019.

“It’s only early days but these are enormously positive signs for a club which has been anchored to the bottom of the NRL for the past three seasons and hasn’t played finals since 2011,” Fox League’s James Hooper wrote last month.

In the next three games, the Tigers will play teams who are currently lower than them on the ladder.

They play the Eels (17th), Sharks (9th) and the Dragons (10th).

Those three games are all winnable. If the Tigers can win all three, they’ll position themselves well to play finals for the first time in 14 years.

Last year, the Knights reached the top eight winning 12 of their 24 games, with a superior differential to the Raiders. To match that, the Tigers would need to win nine of their 18 remaining games. That will well and truly be within reach if they can take advantage of a favourable draw over the next few weeks.

But — will this episode ruin the Tigers? Will they go the way of Parramatta in the wake of the Dylan Brown saga?

Not necessarily. And surely, at a minimum, the run of finishing last is well behind them.

In addition to the so-far positive on-field play, some experts believe that this Galvin situation proves that the Tigers’ off-field leadership is finally starting to show some backbone.

While it may be cold comfort right now, veteran journalist Andrew Webster commended CEO Shane Richardson and the club for their stance during a tough chapter.

“The Wests Tigers just said, ‘We’re not going to be dictated to’,” Webster said.

“If I’m a Wests Tigers fan, I’d see the silver lining in it and it’s that, ‘My club is as strong as it’s ever been and we’re not going to be told what to do or dictated to by the biggest player agent in the game’.

“Shane Richardson was always going to have an offer on the table but he knew that if Galvin was prepared to get to November 1 to test the market that he was not going to be at the Wests Tigers.

“So instead of stuffing around and going on all year about whether he was going to be here or not and then missing out on the market because that’s how the market is now … the Wests Tigers have shown strength that they haven’t had for a very long time.”

“I agree … I think it’s a real shifting moment this for the Tigers,” NRL360 co-host Braith Anasta added.

BENJI SHOWING SIGNS

It takes time for rookie coaches to improve teams.

Just look at the Bulldogs and Cameron Ciraldo, who was facing calls for his sacking in his first season at the helm in Belmore.

Fast forward to now and the Dogs are atop the NRL ladder, after breaking a seven-year drought by slotting into the 2024 finals series.

Marshall, admittedly, is more raw when it comes to coaching experience, having spent only a short period under the experienced Tim Sheens until his untimely axing.

Ciraldo, meanwhile, completed a premiership-winning apprenticeship under Ivan Cleary at the Panthers, playing a pivotal role in their defensive dominance.

The Bulldogs are much further ahead than the Tigers right now, but Marshall and his playing group are certainly trending in the right direction.

Galvin might not believe what Marshall is selling, but it’s clear that others within the four walls at the joint venture club are, after a bright start to what is potentially a make-or-break season.

Whether you agree with their actions or not, Luai and Turuva backed and threw support behind their coach and team with social media posts directed at Galvin.

“The way they’ve fallen behind him, as I said, in a terrible situation, it’s the silver lining for the Tigers,” Webster said.

Luai fires instagram shot at Galvin | 02:04

WILL JAROME STAY?

It was heavily publicised not long after Luai landed at Leichhardt that he had options in his multimillion-dollar contract.

The gun playmaker can’t be criticised for having them included, with contract options becoming more prevalent and being used as bargaining chips to clubs to entice players.

Luai’s $6 million, five-year contract is guaranteed for the first two seasons, but after that he has options in his favour for the following three.

Rival clubs can potentially negotiate with the four-time premiership winner as early as November 1 for a move ahead of the 2027 season.

Should Galvin remain at the Tigers until the end of his contact, a further nightmare for the club could see their star-studded halves pairing depart at the same time.

However, there are positive signs for Tigers faithful. Bizarrely, Galvin going may actually strengthen the Tigers’ hopes of keeping Luai, given they reportedly have a lukewarm relationship which has surely soured during this episode.

The fact Luai was one of two senior figures that approached Marshall regarding Galvin’s position in the side proves two things.

Firstly, that he cares about a team he sees himself as a leader of. Secondly, that he sees a future beyond a time with Galvin in the team.

Luai would not take those steps should he not see any players fit to stand in his shoes, and making a drastic move like that shows he is invested.

What’s more, Luai reportedly is big fan of budding playmaker Latu Fainu, who looks set to be his long-term halves partner.

“Luai also has a high opinion of back-up five-eighth Latu Fainu, who is currently unavailable after undergoing surgery on his thumb last week,” the SMH’s Michael Chammas reported.

Luai was asked about the club’s rising playmakers in March, saying Fainu, who is in his second season of a four-year deal, was a “gun”.

“He’s going to be a really good player and he’s going to have a big career in the NRL,” Luai said.

“I think they’re both (Lachlan Galvin and Latu Fainu) the same age or around about that but they’re two different players.

“They’ve got their own strengths, and they’re going to be scary playmakers for the future ahead.”

So should Tigers fans be nervous Luai will now jump ship? It looks unlikely their No. 7 is heading for the exit.

WHO CAN FILL THE VOID?

Long-term, Latu Fainu looks the likely man to wear the No. 6, being another highly-touted talent that was earmarked as a star of the future at the Sea Eagles in years gone by.

But he’s sidelined for an extended period and has also battled with a consistent hamstring problem.

So for now, there’s a host of names who can wear the No.6.

Adam Doueihi got the nod for the Easter Monday clash in Round 7. The versatile 26-year-old has dealt with injury issues for much of his career but he’s shown that when healthy, he’s a terrific player.

Doueihi has 40 games of experience at five-eighth behind him, so he’s is the natural option to replace Galvin for now.

Jack Bird is another strong option. In recent seasons, Bird has mostly plied his trade at centre or second row, but he has 31 games of NRL experience in the No. 6 jersey. He can turn into the team’s ‘Mr. Fix-It’.

Eiden Ackland and Kurt Falls have been partnering in the halves for the Western Suburbs Magpies, but neither are contracted.

Therefore, if the Tigers wanted to promote either of them, they’d have to wait a month as the rule book state that NSW Cup contracted players or those on a train and trial can’t be promoted to first grade until Round 11 of the season.

The wildcard? If the Tigers make an audacious short-term bid for Broncos halfback Adam Reynolds, as touted by Webster.

“Watch the Tigers make a play for Adam Reynolds,” Webster said.

“I reckon they will because that’s what I reckon they need. They need an experienced half like that until Latu comes through.”
