For the Tasmania JackJumpers, the identity of the club is built upon beliefs developed by Scott Roth and the JackJumpers front office, represented by each player day in and day out.

One player who embodies that identity and holds his teammates to the same standard is the club’s captain, Will Magnay. NBL26 has been an up-and-down season for the JackJumpers skipper in his first year at the helm, though he appeared in 24 games – the most he has played for the club and the second-highest total of his career.

Watch live coverage of NBL and WNBL 2025-26 seasons with ESPN on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1.

Across those 24 games, Magnay averaged 10.4 points, seven rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.4 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 53.4 per cent from the field and 27.3 per cent from three-point range.

His season ended at HoopsFest against Melbourne United when Magnay suffered an acute fracture of the second toe on his left foot. Heading into the offseason, Magnay is a free agent and, speaking at a club media session, was full of praise for the team he captains.

“I love being here [with the JackJumpers], I love Tasmania, and those conversations [about an extension] have started,” Magnay said.

“Personally, I sort of let my agent do that. I just sort of tell him how I’m feeling, and he kind of fills me in with the conversations they’re having.

“I haven’t heard from him for a few weeks, so they’re doing their own thing and figuring it out.

“I love it here, I love this club, this is my home, and somewhere I want to be.”

Having been ruled out for the season, Magnay also provided an update on his status when asked if he could return at some point.

“Bones are interesting because you have to just let them heal, because you don’t want to put yourself at a higher risk,” Magnay said before joking about a potential late return.

“Maybe game five of a grand final if we can make it to that I might be a late call up but yeah it’s looking pretty unlikely that I’ll be back.

“There’s no point rushing what I’m doing, as I don’t want to do something stupid and come back and re-injure myself.”

Nonetheless, it remains an encouraging season for Magnay, who played the most games he has for the JackJumpers since arriving at the club while also recording a career-high 27.4 minutes per game.

He will be a monitored player around the league during free agency, but it appears likely a deal between himself and the club will be finalised early in the offseason, seeing the captain return for another season in charge.
