The San Francisco 49ers suffered a cruel blow during the first half of Super Bowl LVIII on Monday (AEDT), losing linebacker Dre Greenlaw to a freak injury.
The influential defensive player wasn’t even in the game when it happened, the injury occuring while he was jogging back onto the field after a punt.

Greenlaw took a step onto the field from the sideline and then crumpled onto the ground, and the star linebacker was carted to the locker room, according to a video from Allegiant Stadium.
It was later confirmed the 26-year-old had suffered an Achilles injury and he was officially listed as questionable to return. The nature of the injury left many stunned, with fears the player is facing the possibility of a recovery of up to nine months.
Despite the setback the 49ers held the advantage over the Chiefs, taking a 10-0 lead shortly before halftime.
