EAGLES VICE-CAPTAIN WANTS OUT
West Coast veteran Tom Barrass has officially requested a trade to Hawthorn.
The Eagles co-captain has long denied his interest in a move but told the club on Tuesday he wants to be traded to Waverley Park.
The 28-year-old has played 150 games, winning a premiership in 2018 and the club’s best and fairest in 2022.
“Tom has today informed us of his desire to pursue an opportunity at another club,” Eagles General Manager Football Gavin Bell said.
“While the club respects Tom’s request, he is contracted for another three seasons and our vice-captain.
“We will endeavour to meet Tom’s request while protecting the best interests of the West Coast Eagles.”
The Hawks’ first-round pick is expected to be the centrepiece of the deal, with Barrass reportedly to sign a four-year deal with a trigger for a fifth season.
SOUR RUCKMAN ‘A WATCH’ THIS TRADE PERIOD
Just one season into his Power career, ruckman Ivan Soldo is ‘disenchanted’ with the club and is ‘a watch’ this trade period, according to SEN reporter Sam Edmund on Tuesday.
Soldo requested a trade from Richmond to Port Adelaide just last year, but after starting the season promisingly has been usurped by fellow 2023 arrival Jordon Sweet ahead of a crucial finals series.
The 28-year-old played in Port’s first six games before re-injuring his knee, and then fell out of favour with Ken Hinkley’s match committee after a Round 14 loss to GWS. He hasn’t played a senior match since.
Across eight senior games in 2024, Soldo has averaged 10.5 disposals, 28.0 hit-outs — of which an above average 9.6 were to advantage — and 3.8 clearances.
TWIN TIGERS TRADE REQUESTS DROP
Daniel Rioli has made his trade request ‘official’ at his Richmond exit interview today, while Shai Bolton has informed the club he wants to get to Fremantle, according to AFL Media journalist Cal Twomey.
The contracted pair have three and four years, respectively, remaining on their current deals.
The 27-year-old Rioli and has been one of Richmond’s best performers in a difficult year and has played 23 games in each of the past three seasons.
The rebounding defender, who has averaged 23.3 disposals (career-high), four marks, 2.4 inside-50s and 3.9 rebound-50s (career-high) per game, is evidently keen to reunite with former coach Damien Hardwick in Carrara.
The Suns are anticipated to part with at least Pick 6 to pry Rioli from Richmond’s reluctant hands.
Meantime, Bolton has cited family reasons as part of his request to get back to Western Australia, per Twomey.
The livewire forward-midfielder projects as a tremendous addition for the Dockers, particularly with stalwart Michael Walters nearing his AFL end.
Bolton, 25, has also been a durable asset for the Tigers, playing at least 19 games in every season since 2018 and earning an All-Australian nod in 2022.
The Dockers currently boast Picks 9, 10 and 17, with Bolton’s premiership teammate Liam Baker also thought to be keen on returning to WA.
OUT-OF-FAVOUR ROO MIGHT STAY AFTER ALL
Fringe Kangaroos onballer Will Phillips is reportedly leaning towards signing the one-year extension that is currently in front of him, per Nine’s Tom Morris on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old is out of contract this year but isn’t eligible for free agency — chosen by the Roos with the No. 3 selection in 2020 — and was initially thought to be a departure candidate this off-season.
Phillips has averaged 14.0 disposals, 5.0 tackles and 2.3 clearances across 11 senior games this season, having been assigned tagging roles on multiple occasions by coach Alastair Clarkson.
The Oakleigh Chargers product managed healthy averages of 23.0 possessions and 1.5 goals in 10 games at VFL level.
Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle panel in June expressed their collective belief that Phillips would be playing for a rival club in 2025 amid his selection uncertainty.
