Brisbane, Gold Coast and Collingwood on Thursday night will take part in a unique ‘triple threat’ match simulation, which will see all three clubs play four quarters.
There will be three matches featuring two 25-minute periods:
— Periods 1 and 2 at 6.00pm (AEDT): Brisbane Lions v Collingwood
— Periods 3 and 4 at 7.15pm (AEDT): Brisbane Lions v Gold Coast Suns
— Periods 5 and 6 at 8.30pm (AEDT): Gold Coast Suns v Collingwood
The Lions have selected a 36-player squad, which includes co-vice captain Hugh McCluggage and exciting father-son draftee Levi Ashcroft. Callum Ah Chee and Charlie Cameron will also play just five days after representing the Indigenous All Stars against Fremantle.
The Suns will unleash a suite of new recruits — including John Noble, Elliott Himmelberg and Leo Lombard — but will be without Daniel Rioli as he continues to work back from a knee concern.
The Magpies have named two separate squads for their two games, with 33 AFL-listed players in action. Dan Houston, Harry Perryman and Tim Membrey will all feature, but Jordan De Goey (load management), Bobby Hill (load management), Tom Mitchell (foot), Mason Cox (finger), Harry DeMattia (concussion) and Fin Macrae (shoulder) are unavailable.
It’ll be the AFL world’s first look at Brisbane in its bid for back-to-back flags after it emphatically claimed the 2024 premiership with a thumping win over Sydney in the Grand Final.

Speaking on SEN’s Whateley on Thursday, Lions coach Chris Fagan pointed to Hawthorn’s three-peat in the mid 2010s, as well as the Penrith Panthers’ recent four-peat in the NRL, as success stories.
But the three most recent AFL premiers prior to Brisbane — Collingwood (2023), Geelong (2022) and Richmond (2021) – all missed finals the following year.
Fagan declared “ego is the enemy” for his club.
“We’ve just got to make sure that we get back to working hard and staying humble. I think that’s the key thing and that’s what absolutely came through with the Panthers to be honest,” Fagan told SEN.
“We’re aware of it (recent premiers’ downfalls), but I’ve also been involved in a situation where a team (Hawthorn) won three in a row. So all things are possible and you’ve just got to try and control the things that you can control.
“Hopefully the team turns up this year and competes really hard and give ourselves an opportunity.”
