In the context of heightened geopolitical tensions and renewed momentum behind EU enlargement, the new European Parliament antenna office in Chisinau will serve as key contact point between the European Parliament and national parliaments, civil society, and local partners in the Eastern Partnership region.
The office will promote Parliament’s positions and activities, and support democracy and institutional reforms in the region. It will assist with the preparation and follow-up of official visits of MEPs, while reinforcing cooperation with other EU actors on the ground, international organisations, and civil society.
This decision comes as MEPs are set to vote on 11 March 2025 on a new €1.9 billion Reform and Growth Facility for Moldova, to accelerate the country’s socio-economic reforms, strengthen its resilience, and advance its EU integration through grants and low-interest loans.
The establishment of a European Parliament antenna office in Chisinau underscores Parliament’s strong support for the Eastern Partnership region, while fostering stability, democracy, and closer ties between the EU and its neighbours.
Background
Currently, Parliament has three operational antenna offices in New York for relations with the United Nations, in Jakarta for relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and in Addis Ababa for relations with the African Union. The move to open two additional antenna offices (in Moldova and Albania) follows an earlier decision by Parliament’s Bureau to establish offices in Kyiv, Ukraine, and in Panama to deal with relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.
