TROPHY COMPETITION

Semi Finals

Two of the hottest teams in the competition, RLPA and the Salty Pigs, slogged out a tough Trophy semi final that remained scoreless until the seventh minute.

And who else but former Panthers and Titans gun Tyrone Peachey, who has been impressive across the tournament, to score a crucial breakaway try.

Peachey, having been put in space at the halfway line, streaked away from the Pigs defenders, with former NRL star Matt Moylan failing to convert the try.

However, in the second half the Pigs came back strong with Joe Williams scoring a four-pointer that allowed his side to take the lead and secure a tight 6-4 victory.

In the second semi final, Southside Dawgs reigned supreme over United SC, with seven-game NRL outside back Brayden Musgrove delivering an impressive performance.

Jarryd Hayne took the field for the second time in the tournament after he featured in the quarter final for a short period, making a handful of carries in his minutes on the field.

United SC scored the first points, before the Dawgs hit back with a bonus point try before another effort from 50 metres out secured a 13-4 victory.

United’s loss has seen the Fifita brothers, Ben Barba, Hayne and Blake Austin’s side dumped out of the tournament one win away from the grand final.

Salty Pigs beat RLPA — 6-4

Southside Dawgs beat United SC — 13-4

Quarter Finals

Jarryd Hayne took the field for the first time since 2018, featuring for United FC against Reborn in the Trophy quarter finals.

Alongside Hayne, former NRL guns Andrew and David Fifita as well as Ben Barba are representing United FC, who got through the first day of fixtures unbeaten.

Hayne didn’t feature in day one due to a hamstring injury and was on the field for a short period as his side beat Reborn 16-10 with former NRL playmaker Blake Austin scoring an impressive solo try.

It was revealed on the coverage Hayne had re-injured his hamstring, making two tackles before he departed.

“We tried to get him (Hayne) off the tarmac there but we only got one stint out of him, but that was good enough,” teammate Kyle McLean said post-match.

Meanwhile, touring invitational Rugby 7s club Matakesi went down in their final, losing to the red-hot Southside Dawgs 23-18 to progress.

Earlier, Tyrone Peachey once again starred for the RLPA team, scoring the first try of the first Trophy quarter final.

Running from a penalty, the former Panthers utility charged into clear space on the short side, burning defenders to score.

On the first day of the competition, the 33-year-old indicated he could be gunning for an NRL return.

Haas sidelined following ankle surgery | 00:25

“Any NRL clubs out there looking for a No. 14, I’m ready to go,” Peachey said on the coverage, which was streamed live on Kayo.

Another former Panther in Matt Moylan also scored a four-pointer, putting in a grubber into the goalpost which he then scooped up and grounded.

The RLPA outfit went on to defeat the two-time reigning premiers and James Maloney’s side the Southern Sharks 11-8.

In the fourth Trophy finals game, the Salty Pigs continued their day one form, with Kyle Laybutt scoring a matchwinning try to down EZ Squad 16-14.

Victor Radley and Brandon Smith were on hand to coach the Pigs to victory, with former Roosters gun Ben Thomas earning man of the match honours.

However, that clash was marred by an ugly scuffle, with Jesse Marschke and Jordan Scott both being sent for five minutes in the sin bin.

Results

RLPA beat Southern Sharks — 11-8

Salty Pigs beat EZ Squad — 16-14

United FC beat Reborn — 16-10

Southside Dawgs beat Matakesi — 23-18

SHIELD COMPETITION

Grand Final

A Josh Hoffman golden try sealed a hard-earned championship for Legacy, who held off a fast-finishing North Coast Marlins to win the Shield grand final 12-8.

After scores were locked at 0-0 at half-time, Legacy went ahead after scoring two tries, of which neither were converted.

But the Marlins rallied late, scoring two tries in the final two minutes to level the scores 8-8 at the end of regular time.

The second Marlins try was a somewhat controversial one, with a kick seemingly destined to go over the dead ball line bouncing back into play and a Marlins player just getting a hand to the ball to score.

But the Marlins held their composure, with Hoffman getting on the end of a run and scoring from the wing to seal victory.

Legacy beat North Coast Marlins 12-8

Semi Finals

Legacy came away victorious in the first Shield semi final, beating the Port Moresby Vipers 16-11 with former Eels and Dragons playmaker Corey Norman delivering a solid performance.

Meanwhile, North Coast Marlins bested the PAC Baabaas 15-4, booking a Shield finals appearance against Legacy.

Results

Legacy beat Port Moresby Vipers — 16-11

North Coast Marlins beat PAC Baabaas — 15-4

Quarter Finals

Former NRL hooker James Segeyaro showed he’s still got his trademark fancy footwork and agility with a smart run that led to a try for Legacy in the Shield quarter finals.

Facing the Knuckle Dusters, the former Panthers and Sharks rake danced past multiple defenders before putting in a grubber than found his teammate to score in Sunday’s second game.

Joining him in the Legacy side is former Broncos stars Alex Glenn and Anthony Milford, alongside Corey Norman, Gerard Beale, Jordan Kahu, Adam Blair and Josh Hoffman.

Knuckle Dusters hit back with a quick try, but the team that boasts Josh McGuire, Justin O’Neill and Jarrod Wallace eventually went down 14-4, with Milford confirming Legacy’s victory.

Following that clash, the North Coast Marlins delivered a strong performance, beating the Arthur Beetson Foundation 16-4 while PAC Baabaas beat ACTV 21-10.

In the first game of the day the Port Moresby Vipers beat CMBT in a low-scoring affair, winning 6-4 in the first Shield quarter final.

CMBT scored a late, and against the run of play, four-pointer thanks to a pair of chips, but were ultimately unable to convert and equal the scores.

Results

Port Moresby Vipers beat CMBT — 6-4

Legacy beat Knuckle Dusters — 14-4

North Coast Marlins beat Arthur Beetson Foundation — 16-4

PAC Baabaas beat ACTV — 21-10
