Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has lauded the impact star forward Charlie Curnow has on his teammates who are “drawn to him”, after the Coleman Medallist was elevated to the club’s leadership group.
Curnow, the AFL’s leading goalkicker for the past two seasons, joins the group for the first time in a signal of his importance to the Blues, who surged to the preliminary final in 2023.
He joins best and fairest Jacob Weitering and star midfielder Sam Walsh as co-vice-captains, supporting Cripps, giving the Blues leaders on every positional line in 2024.

“Charlie is a great bloke, a quality player and is growing into a great leader among our playing group,” Cripps said.
“His presence and energy makes people drawn to him. He’s a big family man with strong core values that have become infectious throughout our football club and Charlie has played a massive role in establishing that.
“Charles has unique traits and strengths that as a leader complements and helps grow our leadership group. Between the four of us, including ‘Weiters’ and ‘Walshy’, we each lead differently in how we communicate and push ourselves and those around us. That diversity will help us connect and get the best out of ourselves and as a wider playing group.”
Curnow, 27, kicked 81 goals in 2023, having booted 64 in 2022, without missing a game, having endured seasons of serious injuries.
