Manly forward Aaron Woods has announced his immediate retirement from the NRL after 14 seasons in the league.

Woods confirmed he was calling it quits on Triple M’s Rush Hour, having ran out on the weekend for his final game with Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles.

“It was one of the moments where you walk off the field and it’s like, ‘It’s not really going to happen again’. It was (emotional),” Woods said.

“I’m not really one to cry. I didn’t cry on my wedding day but when I did come off the field the first person I saw was my eldest son Buster and my middle daughter Coco and it sort of hit me I won’t be playing in front of them anymore.”

Woods retires having played 269 games in the NRL in a long career that saw him spend his first seven years with the Wests Tigers before stints with the Bulldogs, Sharks, Dragons and Sea Eagles.

“I’ve done nearly everything in the game and I wouldn’t change a thing,” added Woods, who also represented both the NSW Blues and Australia in his career.

Woods also said he believes fellow Sea Eagles player Brad Parker, who ran out with him in NSW Cup on the weekend, is also set to retire, although that is yet to be confirmed by Parker himself.

Parker is contracted with the Sea Eagles until the end of next year.

TIGERS SIGN SHARKS FORWARD

The Tigers have bolstered their forwards stocks with the signing of Sharks enforcer Royce Hunt on a three-year deal after he was granted an early release by the Sharks.

“Wests Tigers is delighted to announce the signing of Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks forward Royce Hunt on a three-year deal,” the club said in a statement.

The powerful-running 29-year-old has been granted a release from the final year of his contract with the Sharks and will join Wests Tigers at the end of this season.

A Samoa international, Hunt has played 70 games for the Sharks over the past five seasons after making his NRL debut with the Canberra Raiders in 2017.

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall says Hunt will be a welcome addition to the club.

“Royce is a great leader who will be invaluable in assisting us with the development of the younger players at the club,” Marshall said.

“He’s a tough and uncompromising middle, and more importantly, he’s a good human.”

“We look forward to welcoming Royce and his family to our club.”

The Cowboys have received a pre-finals boost with co-captain Reuben Cotter signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2028 season.

Cotter, 25, still had another season to run on his current deal but has received an upgrade on the back of his terrific form in the middle for North Queensland, Queensland and Australia.

Serious knee injuries kept him sidelined earlier in his career, but he’s gone from a luckless hooker to one of the most effective forwards in the NRL who can play lock, prop and on an edge.

Bulldogs forward Max King joins the Fox League podcast to go inside the Bulldogs’ remarkable 2024 revival and chat about the impact of coach Cameron Ciraldo, captain Stephen Crichton and the club’s renowned defensive system

That versatility has been vital for the Maroons where he starred in 2023 and claimed the prestigious Wally Lewis Medal.

With the club letting Valentine Holmes and Chad Townsend go next season, Cotter and fellow co-captain Tom Dearden will take on even more responsibility in a team that will return to the finals next week.

“This is a hugely important day for our club being able to formally announce a contract extension for one of our co-captains who has become one of the best middle forwards in the game,” Cowboys general manager of football Micheal Luck said.

“Reuben epitomises what we want our club to represent. He works hard, he’s humble and he’s selfless.

“This gives Reuben, his wife Mackenzie and their young family the security to firmly entrench their roots at home in North Queensland.

“We are thrilled to secure Reuben until at least the end of 2028 and look forward to the contributions he will make to the success of our club.”
