Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s Super Rugby season is over, with the Waratahs fullback ruled out for at least a month due to a fractured jaw.
The 21-year-old sustained the injury during Friday’s 28-21 loss to the Queensland Reds at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, stretchered off the ground with concussion after his head made heavy contact with the knee of teammate Andrew Kellaway.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Waratahs confirmed Suaalii had sustained a “small undisplaced fracture of the jaw” that would require minor surgery.

“He was monitored and has settled well from his concussion,” the Waratahs said in a statement.
“However, over the ensuing days he developed soreness which has been subsequently investigated and has shown a small undisplaced fracture of the jaw.
“In consultation with specialists, it has been determined that a small operation to reinforce the area is the best path forward.
“This will result in a review after four weeks and return to play based on that review.”
The setback puts Suaalii under an injury cloud ahead of Australia’s Test match against Fiji in Newcastle on July 6, while the Wallabies’ first Test against the British & Irish Lions occurs at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on July 19.
“This is unfortunate for us and especially for Joseph,” Waratahs coach Dan McKellar said in a statement.
“We wish him all the best in his recovery and return to full health.
“We will do all we can to facilitate his recovery in consultation with Rugby Australia to have him in the best shape possible for his availability for the Wallabies.”
Suaalii has played four Tests for Australia, making his Wallabies debut against England last November.
The Waratahs, currently eighth on the Super Rugby standings, will next face the Crusaders at Allianz Stadium on Friday.
