Aussie golf star Adam Scott has enjoyed a stunning surge up the leaderboard while Zach Johnson and Billy Horschel hit back at fans during round three at the Phoenix Open.

Scott went into the fourth round tied for 28th with a score of eight-under par but has rocketed past several rivals into T12.

Starting on the back nine, Scott hit a birdie on the par-three 12th before carding a stunning eagle on the par-five 15th hole that left him sitting T10.

Scott then suffered his first bogey of the fourth round on the 17th, dropping him a few places on the leaderboard.

However, he quickly recovered and recorded a birdie on the first hole to leapfrog some of his rivals into T9.

Aside from Scott’s impressive showing, there was drama once again involving vocal patrons as two golfers decided they’d had enough of the sledging.

United States Ryder Cup skipper Johnson fired back after a fan reportedly called him an “a**hole” before he hit a wayward tee shot.

“Don’t sir me,” Johnson said to the gathered fans, uncertain of who sledged him.

“I’m just sick of it. Just shut up.”

Billy Horschel was another who took aim when a fan yelled out during a golfer’s backswing.

“Buddy, when he is focused on the shot, shut the hell up,” Horschel said.

“He’s trying to hit a damn golf shot, dude. It’s our f***ing job.”

The feisty scenes between the gallery and angry players comes just a day after Phoenix Open organisers were forced to halt booze sales and turn away fans on Sunday (AEDT).

It led to wild scenes as fans stripped off their shirts and slid down the muddy hills at TPC Scottsdale while those angry at the booze ban chanted “we want beer.”
