The Newcastle Knights have collected the 2025 wooden spoon after a horror season came to a close with a 66-10 thumping at the hands of the Parramatta Eels.
Following the Dolphins’ 62-point performance against the Raiders earlier today, the Eels became the second team to score at least 60 this round. It’s the first time in 22 years that has happened.

After the Titans upset the Tigers on Saturday, the Knights needed to beat an in-form Eels side in the regular season finale to avoid the spoon.
However, any thought that the Knights would turn their form around and play inspired football for coach Adam O’Brien’s final game at the club was quickly put to bed when the Eels scored two tries in the first five minutes.
Halfback Mitchell Moses scored one of those with a brilliant individual effort, running 90 metres and beating Knights fullback Fletcher Hunt with pace.
Moses recorded a first half hat trick – the first time he’s ever scored three tries in a game.
Parramatta led 34-4 at the break and it looked as if they’d put up a mammoth score.
They kept things rolling in the second forty, with Josh Addo-Carr getting in on the fun with a hat trick of his own.
The star winger finishes the season with 19 tries, four behind league-leader Mark Nawaqanitawase.

Despite playing just 12 NRL games and missing the entire State of Origin series, Moses looks a dead certainty to be picked in Kevin Walters’ Australian squad.
Everything the 31-year-old touched turned to gold on Sunday afternoon, with his finest moment being a 90-metre sprint from dummy half that culminated in one of the season’s finest individual tries.
Likewise, the kick he put in for Josh Addo-Carr’s 45th-minute try was a thing of beauty.

Speaking of Josh Addo-Carr, if Mitch Moses was the popular choice for the player of the match, ‘the Foxx’ couldn’t have been too far behind him.
The veteran winger was a threat every time he carried the ball and finished the match with three tries – including a chip and chase effort that would have made Phil Blake and Scott Gale proud.

The future Knights playmaker is heading to a team in dire straits.
Newcastle were awful over the last two months of the season and they’ll likely start wooden spoon favourites entering 2026.
Brown and his $13 million contract are meant to be the answer alongside a healthy Kalyn Ponga, but the Knights will need more than that to be a top eight threat next year. They need a major revamp.
In his final game for the Eels, Brown was solid enough, scoring the game’s opening try and setting up another.
