Marc Marquez won the Austrian Grand Prix for the first time in his career to extend his MotoGP winning streak to six consecutive rounds, the Ducati rider taking six Grand Prix wins for the first time in 11 years at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday.

The 32-year-old extended his world championship lead to 142 points with his first victory in nine attempts at the Spielberg circuit, the one track on the calendar for the majority of his career where he had never previously won.
The Spaniard stalked pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) for the lead until lap 20 of the 28-lap race, Marquez passing the Italian at the first corner and easing away to win by 1.118 seconds.

Gresini Ducati rookie Fermin Aldeguer stormed through from sixth on the grid to pass Bezzecchi for second place with two laps remaining, the Spanish rider taking the best result of his debut season as Bezzecchi finished third.
“Super happy to finally take the first victory here in Austria,” Marquez said after losing last-lap battles at the Red Bull Ring to Ducati riders Andrea Dovizioso (2017, 2019) and Jorge Lorenzo (2018) when he was riding for Honda.
“As I said on Thursday [in the pre-event press conference], I am riding the red bike and it was working super good. We find a good set-up, especially with the used tyres as we see with Bezzecchi … in the first part he was strong, but I just wait. I tried in the beginning, but it was too risky. I prefer to wait, and then attack at the end. A new outsider arrived and it was Aldeguer this time, he was riding super fast.”
Marquez took advantage of a long-lap penalty carried into the Austrian weekend by younger brother and nearest title rival Alex Marquez to bolster his already significant championship lead, Alex Marquez dropping from podium contention to 11th place after serving his penalty on lap four and eventually finishing in 10th place.
Marc Marquez’s teammate Francesco Bagnaia, winner of the past three Grands Prix in Austria, continued his troubled season by fading to eighth place, 12.486secs from victory.
Australia’s Jack Miller started and finished last to cap a miserable weekend for Yamaha, whose four riders finished in the final four places with Fabio Quartararo 15th, Alex Rins 16th and Miller’s Pramac Yamaha teammate Miguel Oliveira 17th.
Miller, 18th, was 37.478secs behind Marquez after 28 laps, and finished 3.470secs behind teammate Oliveira.
Reigning world champion Jorge Martin (Aprilia) crashed out on lap 14 in his second race back from a long injury layoff, but was unhurt. Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was the race’s only other retirement, his bike bursting into flames when his engine blew with seven laps remaining.
Round 14 of the 22-round MotoGP season will take place at Balaton Park in Hungary from August 22-24.
