MCG investigates homophobic slur by fan aimed at Magpies player involved in Rankine saga

The Melbourne Cricket Club is reportedly investigating a formal complaint made against a spectator who allegedly directed multiple homophobic slurs at a Collingwood player last Friday.

The incident is said to have occurred outside the Collingwood President’s Function, with the persons of interest fleeing the scene at half-time, according to Nine’s Tom Morris.

“It’s my understanding that this incident took place directly outside the Collingwood President’s Function at the Collingwood-Melbourne game on Friday night,” Morris told Nine on Monday night.

“I’m told the person the MCC is looking for was wearing a Melbourne scarf and delivered not one, but two homophobic slurs in the one rant.

“The incident was reported to ground officials via the anti-social behaviour hotline, but before security could get to the man, it’s understood he and his mates left the ground at half-time.”

Morris added that the player who received the abuse was the same Collingwood player that suspended Adelaide star Izak Rankine targeted two Saturdays ago.

“It’s not known what inroads the MCC has made, but given seating outside the particular function room is allocated, it is hoped the investigation won’t take long,” Morris continued.

“However, it’s also thought that these supporters were not entitled to the seats they were in. The AFL and Melbourne are aware of the investigation, while Collingwood was unaware when contacted late today.”

Rankine was banned four matches by the AFL after being found guilty of directing a homophobic slur to a Magpies opponent in Round 23.

He could play in the Grand Final if the Crows lose to Collingwood in their qualifying final on Thursday week, and then make their way to the Grand Final from there.
