Nathan McSweeney has struck an unbeaten double century for Australia A on Day 2 of their clash with the England Lions in Brisbane, in a well-timed reminder to selectors amid his country’s Ashes campaign.
The 26-year-old, who played three Tests as an opener last summer against India, is currently 222 not out, with his Australia A standing tall with a mammoth score of 7/554 at Allan Border Field.
While McSweeney’s dominant knock has come batting at number four instead of opening, the South Australia captain has catapulted his name back into contention as a potential replacement for Usman Khawaja in the near future.

His side now holds a first innings lead of 388, after dismissing the Lions for 166 on the opening day.
Western Australia’s Cooper Connolly was the next best for the representative side with a quick-fire 88, while bowling all-rounder Xavier Bartlett made the most of his spot at seven in the batting order, smacking 83 runs at an even better pace.
Rubbing salt into the wounds of England fans further were the figures of off-spinner spinner Shoaib Bashir, who returned figures of 0/115 from 25 overs.
His efforts come after the 22-year-old was overlooked for his country’s second Ashes Test with the Aussies, with selectors instead opting for batting all-rounder Will Jacks as their frontline spin option.
The unofficial Test between the two sides will be the last of the England Lions’ one-month trip to Australia.
