‘Not something that we like’: Aussies explain shock selection call as spin ‘carrot’ revealed

Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori has emphasised that seaming pitches are solely to blame for the Test team’s ongoing spin snub, brushing aside concerns about the future of the craft.

Courtesy of pace-friendly decks in the Caribbean and on home soil, Australia has not picked a strike spinner for four of its six most recent Tests, including this week’s New Year’s contest at the SCG.

Traditionally, spinners have been most effective during the final two days of Test matches, but multiple of Australia’s recent Test matches have wrapped up in three days or less, negating the need for slow bowlers.

According to Vettori, the recent “trend” of conditions in Australia favouring fast bowlers has seen spinners have less influence on the game. For example, veteran tweaker Nathan Lyon only produced two wicketless overs during this summer’s series opener at Perth Stadium, which ended in just two days.

“Over the last couple of years, Nathan Lyon’s involvement in certain Test matches has been reduced,” Vettori told reporters on Sunday evening.

“The wickets over the last couple of years have been conducive to seam bowling, and the seamers have been so effective that it’s hard to go away from them.

“It just feels like they’re the ones that are going to be in the game most of the time, and the spinners haven’t been able to get into the games on these types of surfaces.”

Asked about the decision to leave out Victorian spinner Todd Murphy for this week’s Sydney Test, Vettori acknowledged that seamers wreaked havoc during last summer’s New Year’s clash at the same venue. Only one of the 34 wickets that fell during the three-day contest was taken by a spinner.

Vettori, New Zealand’s most prolific Test spinner, also pointed out that England once again chose not to select Shoaib Bashir for the series finale.

“You’ve seen over the last three years there’s been diminishing results for spin bowlers here, which is obviously not something that we like, but it’s the nature of the surface,” he continued.

“Both teams saw it that way, that the spin bowler hasn’t been effective in the last couple of years, so the assessment was around looking to use the seamers which have been highly successful for us during the Ashes.”

Following Murphy’s shock omission, former Australian tweaker Kerry O’Keeffe expressed his dismay at the message being sent to aspiring cricketers around the country, questioning whether it will thwart the ambition of young spinners.

However, Vettori had no doubt that spin bowling would remain an integral part of the Australian Test team moving forward.

“I don’t think it’s going to be something that’s going to continue on for years on end,” he said.

“Spin bowling is incredibly important to Test match cricket. I think people love watching it when it’s at its absolute best, when conditions can suit and assist the spin bowler.

“We’re just in the stage now where that’s not the case.”

Last year, Australia picked three strike spinners during the Test tour of Sri Lanka, with Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann joining Lyon in the starting XI for the series opener in Galle.

Pat Cummins’ men are also scheduled to play five Tests in India during the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, which Vettori described as a looming “carrot” for the nation’s fringe spinners.

“When we go to Sri Lanka, we play three (spinners), India two or three most of the time,” he said.

“There’s a real carrot for spin bowlers, that they can put their hand up and then be selected for a series where it’s incredibly important.

“At this point in time, it’s about the fast bowlers, but the spinners have plenty of opportunities coming up.”

Murphy, who made his Test debut in India in 2023, has made a promising start to his international career with 22 wickets at 28.13 across seven matches.

However, the spectacled tweaker was dropped for the second Test against Sri Lanka last year in favour of uncapped all-rounder Cooper Connolly, losing his national contract a couple of months later.

Asked about Murphy’s credentials, Vettori spoke highly of the 25-year-old, who performed commendably in this summer’s Sheffield Shield after recovering from a shoulder injury.

“You’ve seen Todd through the (Australia) A Series and through his time with Victoria, that he’s bowling exceptionally well,” Vettori said.

“The last time he was with the team in Sri Lanka, when he was left out for that second Test match, he possibly wasn’t at his best.

“But since then, I think he’s got his shoulder right, he’s been fully fit, and the bowler that presented in these last two games has been what the bowler we first saw in India when he first came onto the scene.

“He’s ready and he’s bowling exceptionally well.

“It’s just tough to see him getting into the game when these conditions tend to suit the seam bowling.”

Murphy headlines an exciting crop of young spinners waiting in the wings, which also includes Western Australia’s Corey Rocchiccioli and New South Wales leggy Tanveer Sangha, who has already represented his county in white-ball cricket.

“There are a few knocking at the door,” Vettori added.

“When the opportunity presents (itself), they’ll be ready.”

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, England was cruising at 3-211 on day one at the SCG when rain intervened, forcing an early stumps.

The fifth and final Ashes Test between Australia and England will resume on Monday at 10am AEDT.
