Geelong forwards Gryan Miers and Ollie Henry combined for ‘arguably the team goal of the year’ in the second quarter of the Cats’ preliminary final against Brisbane.
Miers was chasing a bouncing ball that seemed destined for the forward-pocket boundary line but just managed to keep it in, before kicking it off the ground towards goal.
Somehow it was bouncing directly for the goals, and it got right to the goal square where Henry was patiently waiting to tap it in — it was as if Lionel Messi was crossing it into Luis Suarez for an easy assist during their FC Barcelona days.

“That’s arguably team goal of the year, that’s one of the best goals you’ll see in footy,” caller Dwayne Russell said on SEN radio.
It was Geelong’s fourth goal in just the first 15 minutes of the second term, as the Cats gained crucial ascendancy in the game.
The Lionel Messi reference stormed social media last year, after a fake quote of Gerard Whateley comparing Miers to Messi sent social media into a frenzy, with Whateley denying the comparison.
But with true class, the AFL 360 and SEN caller played the moment perfectly live from the MCG on AFL Nation.
And naturally, X (formerly known as Twitter) went into a meltdown after Miers’ goal – with all sorts of football comparisons.
Miers wanted to show he could put something special through the big sticks too, and matched his assist with an incredible floater from the opposite pocket only minutes later.
The Cats led the Lions by 19 points at half time, with Chris Scott’s side kicking four goals in the second term from the defensive half.
