Background
The European Parliament has repeatedly stood behind the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people and highlighted their right to determine how they are governed. In February 2026, following widespread protests that swept the country, MEPs demanded the Iranian authorities, under the rule of now-deceased Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, immediately end violence against peaceful protesters, halt all executions, and cease the murder and repression of civilians. Parliament has also long called for the EU to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, before EU member states representatives in the Council finally took the decision in February 2026.
