Petracca bombshell as Demons superstar to stay, speaks on trade speculation

Melbourne superstar Christian Petracca has pledged his allegiance to the club, after weeks of reports over his discontent and desire to be traded to a big Victorian team.

Petracca and the Demons released a statement on Saturday evening, confirming he would be sticking around at the club where he’s contracted until the end of 2029.

In the statement, Petracca did not deny the well-publicised concerns around his future – with teammates and officials alike of the knowledge he would prefer to play elsewhere – but announced he had made up his mind to stay.

“Over the last few weeks, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding my role at the Melbourne Football Club,” Petracca said in the statement.

“This has occurred as part of the end-of-year review process, in which I voiced my concerns as a leader, wanting better for our club, playing group, and fans.

“During this time, I have been in open communication with the player leadership group and club leaders to ensure we can work together to improve as a club.

“I make no apologies for wanting to better our club and contribute to our success both on and off the field.

“I love my footy – it remains my number one priority and always has been. As for my future at the Melbourne Football Club, I remain committed to playing for the red and the blue.”

Petracca was weighing up his future due to the club’s handling of his nearly-fatal King’s Birthday game injuries, as well as concerns about their culture and future prospects.

The Demons produced three consecutive top-four finishes between 2021 and 2023, but only won finals in the first year when they went on to claim the premiership.

They slid to 14th in 2024 with Petracca missing almost half the year, Clayton Oliver never getting on track after an interrupted pre-season and numerous other injury and form concerns amongst the playing group.

Petracca situation takes another turn | 07:20

Petracca’s decision will help ease the tensions at the club heading into the trade period, where they will lose the homesick Alex Neal-Bullen due to a trade request and potentially (though less likely) Kysaiah Pickett.

If Petracca had decided to exit the club it would have been disastrous, both due to his standing as a player, and due to the difficulty of getting a trade done for such a well-paid, high-quality midfielder.

“As we’ve stated all along, Christian is a much-loved member of the Melbourne Football Club and we value him immensely, not only as a player, but as a person and a leader,” Melbourne CEO Gary Pert said.

“Over the past month, we have been open about the fact that Christian has shared some thoughts on how we can improve and better ourselves as a footy club.

“These conversations have made us a better organisation and we’re grateful that Christian, like all our leaders, are willing to have the tough conversations to drive success.

“We move forward from here, aligned, and steadfast in our commitment to achieving the success we know our AFL program is capable of.

“Most importantly, I know a lot of young Demons proudly wearing the number 5 on their back will be eagerly counting down the days until we see Christian back out on the footy field playing the game he loves.”
