Triple premiership Cat and Norm Smith Medallist Steve Johnson is remarkably expected to make a full recovery from a life-threatening injury sustained from a freak accident with a knife.
The Border Mail on Tuesday first reported Johnson suffered a “deep wound to the stomach” on Monday night after a sharp knife in a bag he was carrying accidentally stabbed him as he was attempting to open a gate at his property.
The Herald Sun on Tuesday night stated that a neighbour – a nurse – promptly tended to Johnson and, crucially, gave Wangaratta hospital a heads-up that a patient with a significant wound to their stomach was on the way.

Johnson underwent successful surgery and, while still in hospital, is expected to make a full recovery – an incredible outcome considering there were initial concerns he could have been killed.
The 40-year-old was a superstar forward and an integral member of Geelong’s three flags between 2007 and 2011.
He kicked 516 goals from 293 games with the Cats and Giants, while he was also awarded the Norm Smith Medal after the 2007 Grand Final and was named in the All-Australian team three times.
Johnson retired in 2015 and moved into coaching, with stints as an assistant at Sydney and the Giants.
Johnson was signed by Yarrawonga as its senior coach and had an immediate impact, leading the Pigeons to the Ovens and Murray Football League premiership.
“The YFNC would like to wish our Senior Coach, Steve Johnson a quick and full recovery from his accident on Monday night,” a Pigeons club statement read.
“As you may be aware Steve suffered a nasty stomach wound in a freak accident.
“He has been treated at the Wangaratta Hospital and like all things, time will heal.
“Our thoughts go out to Steve & Erin and their extended families.”
