Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey is mourning the loss of his father, Gordon, who passed away this week following a lengthy battle with cancer.
On Thursday, the 34-year-old posted a tribute to his late father on Instagram, captioning the post: “Rest in Peace Dad, I love you.”
Carey’s father was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in 2021, missing his son’s Test debut at the Gabba in December of that year due to chemotherapy sessions.
“Dad’s been not only a mate but a coach of mine growing up, a mentor,” Carey, a Daffodil Day ambassador, said at the time.
“He’ll be watching. No doubt he’ll be on the phone there and I’ll get a message probably the night before the game telling me what to do.”

Last week, Carey was added to Australia’s T20 squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand as an injury replacement for fellow gloveman Josh Inglis.
It is currently unclear whether Carey will still join the tour.
The first T20 between Australia and New Zealand gets underway at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval on Wednesday at 4.15pm AEST.
