Ricky pulls out of contention for NSW coaching gig as Raiders’ squad woes arise

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has reportedly withdrawn from the race to become the NSW Blues’ next head coach.

Brad Fittler recently resigned from his position, reportedly rejecting a one-year extension to remain in charge of the NSW side.

That left Stuart as a leading candidate to take over the role, but according to The Daily Telegraph, he has other issues to deal with in the nation’s capital.

Stuart is reportedly concerned with the Raiders’ current roster, having lost club stalwarts Jack Wighton and Jarrod Croker.

Elliott Whitehead and Jordan Rapana are also coming to the end of their careers and 2024 looks to be their final season.

Matt Frawley, Brad Schneider and Semi Valemei also have left the club, with the latter pair departing mid-season.

Stuart’s decision comes as a major blow to the NSWRL board who were pushing for his appointment, with a coaching duo discussed which included Melbourne’s Craig Bellamy.

Bellamy’s interest in the role remains unclear and NSWRL bosses are of the opinion he could be the next long-term Blues coach if he walks away from the Storm.

Stuart’s omission from NSW coaching contention thrusts Laurie Daley back in to the frame, having admitted he was keen on returning.

Daley coached the Blues from 2013 to 2017 and Channel 9’s Danny Weidler revealed there was a push from within NSWRL for him to be appointed.

“I’ve said all along I’m always happy to help where I can and I was prepared to help Freddy and it surprised me when Freddy withdrew, ” Daley said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

“Because I would have loved to have been a part of him helping New South Wales.

“I’ve said along if people thought I could help out I would help out in any role. Coach could be an option, being a mentor, being in a leadership role, whatever it may be. I’m always happy to help where I can.”
