South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action following the Proteas’ 98-run victory against Australia in the first ODI in Cairns on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old right-arm off spinner celebrated his ODI debut by taking the key wicket of Australian opener Travis Head on his way to figures of 1/46 from his ten overs.

Head’s departure triggered a stunning collapse of 6/29 from the hosts as Subrayen’s spin bowling counterpart Keshav Maharaj ripped through the Australians with a five-wicket haul.

But the match officials were uneasy with Subrayen’s action and duly reported him.

Subrayen made his Test debut against Zimbabwe last month after a lengthy history of scrutiny over his bowling action.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation as a teenager in 2012 after twice having his action deemed illegal for extending beyond the permitted 15 degrees of elbow extension at the point of release.

He was cleared to return only a month later following remedial work and further testing, only to be reported again in 2014 in a Champions League T20 match in India and in a South African domestic T20 in 2015.

Subrayen was suspended from bowling as a result, and failed his initial reassessment in 2016 before being cleared at CSA’s high-performance centre later that year.

He now must undergo an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing facility within 14 days, just as Australia’s Matt Kuhnemann had to do after he was reported during the tour of Sri Lanka earlier year before being cleared.

Subrayen can continue bowling until the results of the tests are revealed, meaning he can play in the second ODI in Mackay from 2.30pm AEST on Friday.
