Rain has had its early say on the opening day of the 2025 Australian Open, but that won’t stop several Australians and a two-time reigning champion from hitting the court on night one.

Aryna Sabalenka will be the first of the two singles champions from 2024 to hit the court at Melbourne Park this campaign, with the 26-year-old to lock horns with American Sloane Stephens on Rod Laver Arena.
The Belarusian superstar has won the last two women’s singles tournaments, and is strongly backed to win the Grand Slam for a third straight season. Additionally, she also won the doubles campaign in 2021.
Her opponent Stephens is certainly not one to be underestimated, having reached a career-high ranking of third in the world back in 2018. Heading into 2025, she ranked 66th in the world with a tournament-best performance all the way back in 2013 when she reached the semi-final.
Of Australians ready to hit the ground running this evening, three of which are wildcards entries in Daria Saville (ranked 112) for the Women’s, and Li Tu (179) and Omar Jasika (180) for the Men’s.
Jasika was down 2-6, 1-0 to Frenchman Hugo Gaston before rain intervened earlier in the day, and will resume play on Court 3 once the Melbourne rains clears.
