‘SENSATIONAL’ ROBERTSON SHINES

Football fans know better than to fall in love with a loan player but unfortunately for Portsmouth fans, they’re head over heels for midfielder Alex Robertson.

Robertson, on loan from Manchester City, finally scored his first goal of the season for Portsmouth in last week’s 2-0 win over Burton Albion.

And the Socceroos midfielder delivered yet another scintillating performance for Pompey in a 3-0 victory over Northampton Town.

Robertson bagged an assist with a perfectly weighted cross to an unmarked Paddy Lane, who took the ball down and coolly slotted past Northampton goalkeeper Max Thompson.

It was just one of several highlights in an all-action display from Robertson who wriggled free from his marker in tight spaces, made driving runs with the ball and won eight duels.

Matt Drabble, a football reporter for Express FM in Portsmouth, waxed lyrical about the 20-year-old.

“It’s a point that’s been covered to death but what Alex Robertson is doing in this Pompey midfield is sensational, controlling the entire tempo of the game,” Drabble wrote on X.

“Picking up the ball in any position and driving the team on.

“Cobblers just kicking him now because they can’t get near him.”

Robertson wasn’t the only Australian who featured for Portsmouth as recently-capped Socceroo Kusini Yengi started the League One clash against Northampton.

IRVINE’S SWEET STRIKE KEEPS UNBEATEN STREAK ALIVE

Jackson Irvine made a crucial contribution with a sweetly-struck volley to keep St Pauli top of the 2. Bundesliga.

St Pauli took on local rivals Hamburger SV in a fiercely-contested derby which also doubled as a fixture between first and third in the league.

Irvine scored the opener in the 15th minute from a corner when he smashed home a volley from 12 yards out.

St Pauli doubled their advantage 12 minutes later thanks to an own goal from Hamburger’s Daniel Heuer Fernandes.

However, Irvine’s side failed to see out the game as Hamburger struck twice in the space of two minutes in the second half through Robert Glatzel and Immanuel Pherai.

The contest ultimately finished 2-2, preserving St Pauli’s unbeaten run this season and keeping them in top spot.

BOS OFF THE MARK

Over in Belgium and young left back Jordan Bos finally got his first goal for KVC Westerlo in a 3-1 defeat to Anderlecht.

Bos’ goal came in the 90th minute and was nothing more than a consolation, but the Aussie will no doubt hope it’s the first of many to come.

It was a strong defensive showing from the former Melbourne City defender, as he won 14 duels and made six recoveries.

Unfortunately for Westerlo, the loss kept them in 15th place and in the relegation round spots.

MABIL WEAVES MAGIC WAND IN FIVE-GOAL THRASHING

Awer Mabil was amongst the goals as his Swiss outfit Grasshopper ran riot over Lausanne.

Mabil assisted Grasshopper’s third goal and scored the fourth in a 5-0 thumping, with the result pushing the Zurich-based club into 8th.

The Socceroos winger now has four goals and three assists across the season.

ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE GROUNDS …

In Scotland, Martin Boyle played a crucial role for Hibernian as he assisted both of their goals in a 2-0 win over Aberdeen.

Kye Rowles played the full match and helped Hears keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock, with young midfielder Calum Nieuwenhof also starting.

Over to the Netherlands and Garang Kuol was a second half substitute for FC Volendam in a 5-0 loss to PEC Zwolle.

Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan couldn’t keep a clean sheet as AZ Alkmaar drew 1-1 with FC Utrecht.

In England, Massimo Luongo and Cameron Burgess played the full 90 minutes as Ipswich Town continued their remarkable run of form in the Championship with a 2-1 win over Coventry City.

Unfortunately for Harry Souttar he continues to be cast aside at Leicester City as he was an unused substitute in a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Alessandro Circati helped Parma keep a clean sheet with a 1-0 win over Spezia that keeps the club at the top of the table in Italy’s Serie B.

In Japan, defender Thomas Deng also kept a clean sheet for Albirex Niigata as they beat Cerezo Osaka 1-0 while goalkeeper Mitch Langerak and Nagoya Grampus played out a 1-1 draw against Kashiwa Reysol in the J1 League.
