The afternoon session of day three of the Boxing Day Test was delayed by six minutes after third umpire Richard Illingworth got stuck in an elevator at the MCG.
As the players walked out for the resumption of play after the lunch break, on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough were informed that Illingworth had not returned to his viewing box. While travelling from the dining area back to his designated seat, the Englishman had become trapped in one of the iconic venue’s lifts.
Australian opener David Warner cracked up with laughter upon discovering the reason for the delay, while reserve umpire Phillip Gillespie was spotted bolting up towards the box to substitute in as third official.
Thankfully, after six minutes of waiting around, Illingworth escaped from the elevator and emerged from the viewing area, giving a sheepish wave to his fellow umpires before play resumed.
