Australian cricketer Steve Smith has vowed to keep pushing his case for a national T20 recall after missing selection for the upcoming tour of the United Kingdom.
The 35-year-old, who played the most recent of his 67 T20Is in February, was not selected for June’s T20 World Cup campaign in the Caribbean, where Australia failed to qualify for the semi-finals following a historic loss to Afghanistan.
Smith was again overlooked for the T20 squad for next month’s white-ball tour of Scotland and England despite the recent retirement of veteran opener David Warner, with national selectors preferring rising stars Cooper Connolly and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Speaking to Fox Cricket this week, Smith opened up on the disappointment of his axing from the national T20 side, acknowledging the team’s preference for “strong guys that smack it miles”.
“In terms of international T20s, I don’t know what’s going on there,” Smith said.
“They’ve obviously got some people they want to bring in, and that’s fine.
“I understood the way that they wanted to stack up for the World Cup, with all the strong guys that smack it miles. I understood that.
“I’m not that fussed. I’ll just go about my business, keep trying to improve and get better.”
Last month, Smith steered the Washington Freedom towards their maiden Major League Cricket title, finishing the T20 tournament as the franchise’s equal leading run-scorer with 336 runs and a strike rate of 148.67.
During the final against the San Francisco Unicorns, which the Freedom won by 96 runs, Smith was named player of the match after clobbering 88 (52) against a bowling attack that featured Australian captain Pat Cummins and Pakistan quick Haris Rauf.
Smith hopes his recent success in T20 leagues has shown Australian selectors and Indian Premier League franchises he’s still a weapon in the game’s shortest format – the right-hander has not featured in the IPL since 2021, having gone unsold in the previous two auctions he entered.
“I’d certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I’ll be throwing my name in the hat, and we’ll see how we go,” Smith continued.
“I feel like in every opportunity I’ve had in T20 cricket recently and franchise stuff, I’ve played quite nicely. So hopefully I just keep putting my name up there and enjoying it.”

Meanwhile, Smith is eager to play some Big Bash cricket with the Sydney Sixers in January following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, although it’s unlikely he’ll be available for the finals campaign due to Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka, which kicks off in early February.
“I haven’t even looked at the schedule, to be honest,” Smith explained.
“But I’ve enjoyed playing for the Sixers whenever I’ve had the opportunity. It’s a really great franchise with great people, and they’ve had a lot of success.
“We’ll see how we go. I’d love to play a few games.”
When quizzed about the lure of winning gold at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, Smith laughed: “That’s still a while away as well, so we’ll wait and see. Never say never.
“I did watch quite a bit (of the Paris Olympics). I quite enjoyed it.
“It’s good to watch and good to see the Aussies do really well.”
