Mollie O’Callaghan was stunned in the 100m freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships on Friday night with Marrit Steenbergen clinching the title in an upset victory.
O’Callaghan was the favourite in the event, which she came up short in at Paris one year ago, and was expected to seal her fourth gold medal of the meet.
But despite a strong finish, she fell narrowly short with Steenbergen, the world champion from Doha last year, winning the race by just 0.12 seconds.
O’Callaghan told Channel 9 after the race that she was exhausted by the meet, which was far busier for than her competitors, while she said she was pleased with her effort after a “s**tshow of a year”.
“I’m tired, I’m not going to lie … none of those girls did what I did last night,” she said.
Elsewhere, Australia’s Matthew Temply booked his spot in the 100m butterfly final by finishing third in his semi.
