The Toffees are not moving from Goodison Park, which they have called home since 1892, to their new venue at Bramley-Moore Dock until next season, but the very first match was played at the state-of-the-art stadium on Monday evening.
An under-18 fixture between Everton and Wigan had the honour, as 10,000 fans were let in as the first of three test events before it starts hosting Premier League matches.
In the 12th minute the first goal was scored at the new ground courtesy of Wigan’s Harrison Rimmer, and the Liverpool fan was prepared for the moment.
Rimmer held up six fingers during his celebration as a reference to the Reds’ six European championships, just to remind Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals.
Apart form Rimmer’s cheek and Wigan going on to win the match 2-1, the first game at the new stadium was a hit.
It holds 52,888 spectators and will become the Premier League’s seventh biggest venue.
It will also host matches during the 2028 Euros.
