Marsh was on nine off 25 balls and facing Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin when an appeal went up for caught behind on day two of the second Test.
Umpire Richard Illingworth didn’t look convinced but he was forced to raise his finger after Marsh seemingly gave himself up and started walking.
“Oh there you go, that’s why they asked, they suspected there was something,” Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.
“Mitch Marsh, before the umpire could even react, took two big steps towards the change room, then pulled up and all of a sudden the finger shot up.”
“He might have just got a feather,” Ravi Shastri replied.
“Mitch Marsh just took one step then tried to hold his momentum but then realised he’d given himself away, it must have been the faintest of edges, it didn’t look to deviate a great deal,” Gilchrist said.
Replays then showed a gap between bat and ball and snicko confirmed Marsh didn’t in fact hit the ball.
“That is extraordinary… watch his reaction,” Gilchrist said.

“You’re right, he took that step and that’s what convinced the umpire,” Shastri said.
“Ashwin said to (wicket-keeper) Rishabh (Pant) ‘what happened there’.”
“There was no certainty from the bowler… an amazing turn of events,” Gilchrist said.
“There looked a clear gap between bat and ball,” Kerry O’Keeffe replied.
“The bat is clipping the pad but clearly he was sure he hit it, otherwise he would have reviewed,” Gilchrist said.
“Do you think his two steps towards the dressing room convinced Illingworth that he hit it?” O’Keeffe asked.
“Definitely, absolutely sure of it. I don’t think his finger would have gone up if he’d stayed his ground,” Shastri said.
“The keeper and the bowler were half-hearted (in their appeal).”
After more replays showing several angles, Gilchrist agreed but added it mattered little now.
“You can’t give that out on review,” he said.
“Marsh was obviously convinced that he felt like he nicked it and it doesn’t matter what we think now, how much we dissect it, read the paper tomorrow it will say caught Pant bowled Ashwin.”
“That’s the least enthusiastic caught behind I’ve ever seen celebrated,” O’Keeffe said.
