Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has taken to social media to apologise for not congratulating the Penrith Panthers in his post-match speech after Sunday’s 26-24 grand final loss.
Reynolds struck a dejected figure when he took the stage to address the crowd, but spoke well when he credited his team for an “amazing” season, the Brisbane fans and even congratulated referee Adam Gee for officiating his first grand final.
“Firstly I’d like to thank the NRL and Telstra. Thanks for another great season. Without you guys, none of this is possible,” he said.
“To everyone who made today possible in the background (thankyou). The match officials, particularly Adam Gee, congratulations on your first referee (Grand Final).
“To the Broncos. All the boys. Keep your head up lads. It’s been one hell of a year. I love every single one of yas. To all our fans and supporters, both interstate and back home, we’re extremely sorry we couldn’t get the job done tonight, but we’ll be back bigger and stronger next year.”
However, Reynolds forgot to mention the premiership winners at all in an awkward moment.
Late Sunday night, Reynolds apologised to the Panthers, writing he “forgot to congratulate” them in his speech.
Reynolds didn’t have his best game on Sunday night, missing six tackles and misfiring on a couple of short drop outs – one of which led to a crucial Panthers penalty goal in the first half.
The halfback, who has helped turn around the on-field performance of this Broncos franchise since arriving in 2022, was one of his team’s best this season but has now lost his last two grand final appearances – both to the Panthers (one as a member of Souths in 2020, Broncos in 2023).
