‘Timing is right’: Blues to cement ‘instrumental’ footy hire in crucial Voss boost

Carlton has reportedly secured revered footy executive Chris Davies as its next football boss after weeks of talks.

The 11-year Port Adelaide general manager of football on Monday confirmed his Alberton departure, set to join the Blues and coach Michael Voss, per the Herald Sun on Monday afternoon.

Incoming Carlton chief executive Graham Wright had sought better support around Voss, who will enter the final year of his contract in what is certain to be another high-pressure season at the helm.

“We wish Chris all the very best for what the next chapter holds for him and his family. He’s made a significant contribution to the Port Adelaide Football Club and has been instrumental in an era of significant change and growth for the club,” Power chief executive Matthew Richardson said in a club statement.

Davies said “the timing is right” to part ways with the club he’s served at since late 2014.

“Port Adelaide has been a significant part of my working life, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together during this time,” Davies said on Monday.

“The decision to leave wasn’t easy, but I feel the timing is right for both the club and I.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with exceptional people – from players and coaches to staff and volunteers – and I’m confident the club is well-positioned for future success under Josh Carr. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this great football club.”

If his Carlton move goes ahead as expected, Davies will fill the position left by dismissed former footy boss Brad Lloyd.

It’s a substantial loss for the Power and first-year senior coach Josh Carr after the departure of Ken Hinkley — who’d also been linked to a role at Princes Park alongside companion Voss.

It’s the latest move in an off-season of significant change for Carlton, which just days ago confirmed the exits of coaching figures Aaron Hamill, Tom Lonergan and Aaron Greaves.

And in terms of departing player personnel, Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni have already indicated their desire for a fresh start, while Charlie Curnow has been the constant subject of trade speculation.

Voss spoke on radio on Monday to shut down that Curnow conjecture, but he confirmed the club had told forward Elijah Hollands to explore his options elsewhere amid off-field concerns.
