Up to 19 debuts as surprise sides lead the way: AFL 2024 All-Australian squad revealed

The 44-man AFL All-Australian squad for 2024 has been revealed, with two surprising teams providing the most nominees.

Brisbane, who finished fifth, and Fremantle, who didn’t even make the top eight, lead the way with five players each inside the squad which will be narrowed down to 22 on Thursday night at the AFL Awards.

The Lions are represented by Harris Andrews, Joe Daniher, Lachie Neale, Cam Rayner and Dayne Zorko. Neale was notably not selected last year when he won the Brownlow Medal, while Rayner is a slight surprise as he does not rank inside the top 100 players in the AFL Player Ratings metric.

The Dockers have two potential first-timers with Jordan Clark and Hayden Young, while Andrew Brayshaw, Luke Ryan and Caleb Serong are all seeking a second blazer.

Minor premiers Sydney have four nominees while fellow top-four sides Geelong, GWS and Port Adelaide have three apiece.

Essendon, Melbourne and St Kilda have just one each while Adelaide and Richmond are the only clubs not represented.

The Tigers won the wooden spoon, while the Crows likely would’ve had a nominee in Izak Rankine, but he played one fewer game than required (16), through a combination of suspension and injury.

Max Gawn could become a seven-time All-Australian, with only nine other players having earned that many blazers. Marcus Bontempelli is seeking his sixth blazer.

There are 19 potential debutants – Cam Rayner, Jacob Weitering, Darcy Cameron, Jordan Clark, Hayden Young, Max Holmes, Noah Anderson, Sam Collins, Brent Daniels, Jesse Hogan (a near-certainty as the Coleman medallist), Massimo D’Ambrosio, Dylan Moore, Harry Sheezel, Tristan Xerri, Jason Horne-Francis, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Jake Waterman and Adam Treloar.

Meanwhile 10 players are hoping to go back-to-back – James Sicily, Jack Sinclair, Dan Houston, Errol Gulden, Marcus Bontempelli, Charlie Curnow, Zak Butters, Nick Daicos, Zach Merrett and Caleb Serong.

Notable absentees include last year’s captain Toby Greene, Rowan Marshall, Matt Rowell and Tom Green.

The 2024 All-Australian selection panel is Andrew Dillon (Chair), Eddie Betts, Jude Bolton, Nathan Buckley, Kane Cornes, Abbey Holmes, Glen Jakovich, Matthew Pavlich, Laura Kane and Josh Mahoney.

The 22-man All-Australian team will be unveiled at AFL Awards night, exclusively live on Fox Footy on Thursday night, along with the Rising Star winner, AFLPA awards winners and AFLCA MVP.
