ASHES LIVE: All the latest updates from the fifth Test at the SCG
But with the fifth and final Test nearing its conclusion, attention has started to turn to who will be named player of the series.
Joe Root won’t receive the honour but he has performed admirably in a losing side with two centuries, while Alex Carey was a standout for Australia in Adelaide.
But at this stage, it seems a clear two-horse race between Mitchell Starc and Travis Head for the Compton–Miller Medal.
Head brought up his third century of the series on Tuesday and now has 600 runs over four-and-a-half Tests, the most of any batter in an Ashes series since Steve Smith’s 774 in 2019.
He would be an automatic lock for player of the series if it wasn’t for Starc, who has been a wicket-taking machine and shouldered added responsibility with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood banged up.
Starc has 28 wickets so far and needs just two more to record the best haul since Mitchell Johnson’s stunning 37-wicket effort in the summer of 2013-14.
