Michael Maguire declared the Broncos “learnt a lot” in their 32-22 loss to the Raiders, with the former NSW coach shouldering the blame for “missing the kick”.
Following a 50-14 Round 1 victory over the Roosters, Brisbane were handed a “reality check” according to commentator Dan Ginnane, being ambushed in the nation’s capital.
The Raiders consistently bashed the Broncos middle forwards and Maguire was asked if their intensity to start the clash “rattled” Brisbane’s free-flowing attack from a week earlier.

“I’ll take a fair bit on this one,” Maguire said in the post-match press conference.
“Because I will be able to share that with my players, but I’m going to wear a bit from this performance.
“Just understanding the playing group, getting to know them at a high level, I’m learning about the group all the time.
“I’m going to take responsibility on understanding the group… I learnt a lot tonight, I really did. I really learnt a lot and I will be able to chat with my players and go from there.”

The Broncos recorded 15 errors to the Raiders’ 10, while Ricky Stuart’s men also completed at 81 per cent compared to Brisbane’s 65 per cent.
Fox League’s James Hooper also asked why the Broncos “missed the kick” and were unable to match it with their opponents who scored twice inside 16 minutes.
And while the scores sat at 16-10 at halftime, with both teams in the game, two quickfire Canberra tries after the break once again stunned Brisbane.
“That’s the NRL, you have to turn up for every single game, it’s a good lesson for us,” Maguire explained.
“They jumped into us at the start and we didn’t react hard or fast enough.
“Welcome to playing in the NRL, if you don’t quite get your mark right from the start, we just didn’t capitalise on being able to get back in the game the way we know we can play.
“It will be good for myself to observe and work with the group… there was a lot of hype last week… we got jumped early and they put a bit more energy into what they were doing.”
